So just spoken to my YO apparently this morning she found Leo's h/w combo on the floor in his stable with all the straps done up on it!! Luckily he isnt injured just cold, is this common? How on earth do they do it?

My horse did it plenty in the field - or rather he allowed his friend to do it to him. He'd grab the neck cover and pull the whole thing over his head! but I've never known it in the stable when a horse was alone!

When this happens is usually because they have got the rug over their necks.
So is fillet string doing its job?
Is it tight enough?
Maybe horse had a good roll and it slipped forward so horse had to struggle out?!

Or maybe they just didn't like the colour!

My old girl was a rug hater and trashed them whenever she possibly could

She had an awesome way of doing it though, very clever! She would roll, and stay mostly on her back while wiggling her legs under the surcingles, no matter how tight i did them up! just took her a little longer if i did them tighter lol. She would then stand up and the whole thing would rip to pieces and she would calmly step out and go on her merry way! if i was lucky she would only rip the straps and a little of the rug and id get my sewing kit out. Really annoying in the middle of winter, when fully clipped and in full work. Id leave a spare on the gate in case she got it off while i was at work, as if she got cold she would wait at the gate for some kind soul to put her spare on. :D

Got better with rugs eventually, bless her.

When i was looking after a friend's horse, i put the rug on, made her feed, took it to her and yes she'd removed her rug!!! She just wriggled out of it on occasion! No particular reason I don't think, she was young and it amused her!

My mare has only done this once, funnily enough it was a combo. Dont know how she did it but everything was done up and nothing was ripped. I never put it on her again, she always wears rugs with detachable necks and has never done it with these.

My new mare got her Amigo turnout rug off in one a couple of weeks ago. It doesn't have leg straps just a fillet string which had come undone at one side. The whole thing must have gone over her head. Thing is she's quite head shy so goodness knows how the trauma of that coming over her head didn't kill her!

Both of mine have stripped off more than once.

Kels took hers off and left it in the field inside out with all the straps done up (combo with leg straps).

Sham, on the other hand, took a dislike to her fleece, and managed to remove it, again with all straps done up... but she was wearing it under her combo (with legs straps and surcingles still done up).

These horses are horsdini's!!! It's just amazed me that he managed to get it off without damaging it, thinking maybe a webcam to film his evening antics! Will see if he gets it off tonight! Silly boy will freeze!
