After several injections it turns out that my girl isn't responding to steroids in one fetlock making her one of the 1in10 that don't typical of her!
My vet is coming oujt on Mon to try a different drug but not sure what yet as he was getting inside info from a good surgeon friend! One drug began with a D?
Does anyone have any experiences of horses that steroids don't work for and info on other drugs that have been used?

Hi...My Dales had 2 different steroids into his hocks 2 years ago, followed by a tildren infusion, with no effect. He then had Cartrophen a disease modifying drug....4 injections weekly for a month with much better results. He went from 4/10 lame to less than 1/10.
It is given into the muscle so targets all joints and can then be given as a single top up injection at regular intervals. We have just finished another course of 4 as I was unaware last time round that you could top up so needed to start again, the plan for us is to inject at regular 3 month intervals.
I have had to pay as he is no longer insured....around £120 per injection including call out however if you are willing to inject yourself and source with a prescription on the internet you could probably halve that.
Good luck

Thanks mine is no longer covered too so i will be paying, vet is trying to be helpful by not just using the most expensive drug but has rung this morning saying that newmarket top surgeons have been using an anabolic sterpid on non responsive horses which we will be trying but that after that there is nothing else except surgery which i have been told will have a very low outcome.
Surely there are other things like catrophen that we can try if im willing to stump up the cash otherwise i dread what will have to do wyh her?

I have a horse with bilateral arthritis (DJD) in his fetlocks. My vet (NEH) actually was reluctant to inject as the evidence suggests that the fetlock doesn't respond well to them compared to other joints.
I took my boy's shoes off & he's been on the Dr Green for nearly a year.
After 4 months he was sound, but I left him & now he is perfectly sound & feeling as good as ever & coming back into work :)

Oh really?! That's interesting as my mare had injections in her fetlocks with pretty much zero success.

Mine did improve greatly with IRAP treatment though, so it may be worth asking your vet about that. Best of luck.

That is interesting Puppy. I think a lot of the issues is 'joint injections' grouped together are a very successful treatment & this is often used when discussing treatment plans with owners.
However when they are looked at seperately there are large discrepancies in success. I was lead to believe that hocks carry a high success rate, fetlocks very much less so...hence why I decided against it.

The steroid joint injections didn't work very well on my girl's arthritic hock. Lasted about 10 days, I think. We had much better success with catrophen injections. It took a few weeks to build up in her system, but she's been sound ever since. We're nearly 3 months on now and she's back to normal. They're also not cripplingly expensive. Good luck!

If the drug he is trying doesn't work then i will bring it up with him. Hopefully he is one that is for cartophen.
Wonder if i've just been a bit pushed to the joint injections though. Still will see what this one does first, interesting though.
