Horse that hates winter....is it possible??

After nearly giving up on my share horse, quite a few napping/spinning etc posts on here, i decided to start riding him again properly, mainly hacking. I started a few weeks ago and have had no problems since, he seems happy to be out which has given me more confidence....hopefully it lasts!

I was told that the napping is a problem he has had for years, he's getting on a bit now so would be hard to get rid of, and that it seems to happr in late autumn/winter.
Is it possible that he just doesn't want to be ridden out in winter when its cold, wet, snowy? He is a very 'good doe'r and lives out 24/7 but loves to be in his barn and not too excited by snow.
Or am i just finding excuses for him.....?
 
Not quite sure what you meant about loving his barn if he is out 24/7...? Do you mean he has access to it from field or is it an arena in a barn?
 
Is it possible he has some sort of mild arthritic condition that plays up when the weather is cold and wet, hence his reluctance to work in those weathers?
 
im convinced my mare doesnt like the winter, she was an absolute nightmare and is now a different horse since the milder weather!
 
I think horses get depressed with the weather the same as us. Back in Feb we had an awful few weeks, rained non stop and the horses really looked fed up with it. A couple were a bit on the grumpy side and seemed to want to be left alone. But now the weather is warmer and sunny, they have all cheered up and seem happier in theirselves.

They have feelings and emotions just like us! :)

As far as i know he doesn't have a condition. He is no stiffer than any other horse i've seen this year, all good considering he is about 17.
 
My horse is a crabby, irritable litte wotsit in the worst of the winter! He goes through silly little cycles, especially when the grass is at its worse.

Now he's out til half 7 at night, on good grass and he's much happier! :)
 
Maybe i will give him another go them, he really knocked my confidence and i didn't want to leave it too long before finding another ride as i'd talk myself out of it. At least now i'm enjoying riding again.
