Just as above really. With the price of horses being so cheap and all this abandonment I was just wondering how many horses actually get stolen in any given year - if anybody knows?

I don't think many at all really - not theft from someone breaking into your property anyway. I think there are cases of people loaning horses and selling them on which is technically theft.

I worked in horse insurance for nearly 7 years and I have to say i did not see one of our cases when i reviewed claims that included any theft of horses! I did insure one that was later discovered to have been stolen when the new owners (who insured it) had it checked for a microchip by their vet.

I also insured another horse whose name I then saw on this website in the stolen section. I notifed the poster and the police became involved. That horse was a horse that was stolen whilst on loan though - the thief hadn't changed the name when they insured it though and didn't provide a passport number. That was their downfall. Thankfully we successfully managed to reunite the horse with it's correct owner.
