I have been informed of several horse thefts in and around the Hull (East Yorkshire) area, mainly coloured horses or feathered horses, taken from fields.

Is this happening anywhere else in england or are we just bearing the brunt?

Because of the type of horse being stolen and the fact that a similar thing happened this time last year, many are assuming that it is linked to Appleby horse fair.

Any opinions/ ideas?????

i wouldnt like to say ... to close to home! mine are locked away on a night....
very scary stuff ..
its not fair!!!!
its so sad to hear of any animal been taken from the rightful owner.. i just pray for you all that all of ours are kept safe and sound .....

Easy option, why don't you go and see if they're there?

Every year Appleby bears the brunt of the vicious rumours concerning horse thefts - and yet never do these oh-so-convinced gypsy haters turn up to reclaim their stolen beasts.

If this is the start of it, I'm asking Admin to ban me until about a month after Appleby...

would it really surprise you? these people will take the opportunity to steal most things. Thay already fail to pay their contibutions to society and make themselves difficult to trace as they move around. I wouldnt be quite so quick to defend them

Far too close to home as the owner of a hairy horse! I haven't heard anything where I am. OP where did you get your info from and do you have anymore details about locations etc. Can you let me know? PM if you prefer.

WOW ok
Firstly
I am not a gypsy hater, I respect their choice of lifestyle and the way they treat their animals, just because it is not the lifestyle or attitude to horsecare i would choose, doesn't make it wrong and i accept that!
Secondly
My horse hasn't been stolen (thank god) but if it was i would travel to the other side of the world to get her back, as would god knows how many owners so i think its very unfair of you to suggest that these people do not love their horses and won't go to find them.

I was not blaming gypsies, however i was suggesting that it is slightly coincidental that around the time of appleby horse fair, horses go missing. It could be unrelated, it could be people wanting to sell the horses to the gypsies at the fair.
This was not meant to be an argument starter so please don't make it one.

to Walrus, i have been told my my yard owner, friends on different yards etc. at first i thought it was just chinese whispers. However, today i was told by a good friend that three horses were stolen from Hull and i have confirmed reports from yards surrounding the area, so unfortunately i cannot believe it to be made up. And i agree it is very close to home (quite literally 16 miles away from my yard) :(

Sorry to ask more questions but do you know where the yards were in Hull. I'm out to the west of the city. :(

Apparently they were taken from Endike lane, I presume they were thethered horses as i dont think there is a yard there. :)

But who tethers their horses? Only travellers surely? I woukd have thought most non-travellers wouldn't just tether their horses to the roadside - not exactly secure!

On another note, just come back from SJing today Doncaster way and a traveller (the event organisers obviously knew him) turned up parking his car behind a horse box (3T van type one) that had it's back (tack room) door wide open. The event organisers came to tell him to park in the car park not the wagon one to which he replied he had just come to watch the horses - funny cos how he'd park, right behind the van, he wasn't gonna see much!!! Lol. He was told where the car park was but surprise surprise he didn't end up there or indeed watching any horses!

Just remember to be vigilant. The event organisers there knew he was from the travelling community as evidently he's turned up before so when you are at shows do not leave your wagon unlocked and unattended if you have valuables in it.

I actually went to stand by the box in this instance as the owners weren't there and their tack was clearly visible inside the back of the lorry. I think the man who turned up was taking note of the registration number of the horsebox as well - not sure why.

There is a very large group of travellers moving through our area at the moment (they are parked up locally). I do not have issue with them as such but I think they are a little rude where they have set up camp - on a kids play area/football pitch. I don't think they do help themselves by doing this to be honest, it's like the blooming caravan club the amount of them that are there!!! Means noone else can use the area now as they've taken up the whole bit. Funnily I bet if I set up camp there I would be moved on - ho hum..........!!!
