I've been told by alot of people that they have found their horses with a plait, or something made to look like a windknot, in their manes. A few people i know have had horses around them stolen also.
Please keep an eye open for these people, and please watch out for your horses if you are in this area.

If you actually know personally anyone who has had a horse stolen could you put the crime reference on here please? Were the horses confirmed stolen after being plaited?

as far as i was aware, there'd been no thefts but there have been horses with plaits found, including one that has a pulled mane and NEVER gets windknots.

more details please and which area?

This quote fromt eh article had me in stitches: 'Plaiting' is a method whereby a horse can be marked for theft when one section of a horse's mane is roughly plaited indicating that it is tame enough to be caught and removed by a stranger.

I wish someone would tell my frequently-plaited Welsh that he's tame enough to be caught by anyone, let alone a stranger.

Our horses will be safe then, guarantee if you turn them out plaited for an early start to a competition, they will efficiently remove each others plaits.

I thought they were just annoying, maybe they are clever & do this to protect one another so they don't get pinched.

Sorry, that responce was a bit mean and sarcastic!.

Gillian - these rumours of marking are bogus.

There is no evidence linking plaits to theft.
Most likely the plaits are caused by the wind, or possibly kids, or at the stage these rumours are at now, by someone else to intentionally wind you up.

Think about it - would a thief warn you in advance.
Would a thief hang out around your field and risk identification and getting caught.
Why would they waste time plaiting, especially the intricate ones you see which are wind plaits.

By all means, if a horse has been stolen, then get the facts & make a post to let people know, but please don't circulate scaremongering.
