My Anglo-Arab Cleo is 20 and had recovered from guttural pouch empyema. She is now ewting very well, but is very thin at her back end. Front half is fine! Can anyone explain this and offer help? I am a novice at all this as the horses (2) belonged to my husband until recently.

We fed up our elderly cob on soaked sugarbeet with dried grass chaff and soaked grassnuts, after a nasty week-long colic, which made us decide to retire her. She had lost a lot of weight but this regime got her back to normal over time.

Thank you, Pearlsasinger. I will try to ad those things to her diet. It just seems curious that her front end is OK (though her ribs show a little bit) while the back end is horrifyingly thin. I wonder if anyone else has had a horse that showed this.

This is often seen in older horses when they lose condition .
Go for a slow weight gain over time using a fibre based diet I would also feed some micronised linseed and a good general min and vit supplement .
I would consider using probiotics as well I use protexin .
Keep your horse warm enough but obviously not too hot .
What exactly you feed depends on the situation you keep the horse in and your budget and the forage available to you . I would seek advice for someone knowledgeable on the ground who can help you find the best diet based on your situation .

Echo this... my first thoughts were keep warm, with a fibre based diet and some added Linseed in there, together with a good vits & mins supplement if needed. I too would be looking to have a a natter to someone more knowledgable/experienced on your particular situation...and pick their brains! Sarah Braithwaite from Forage Plus would be the person I'd be speaking to ;)

Hope she carrys on recovering well OP.
