My horse who is limited to me riding him in walk only at the moment following injury, is very hyped up and full of energy at the moment, he often gets like this at this time of year. Last night he shied at a 'shadow' in the menage, spun and bolted (in canter) as I was walking him on a long rein to stretch him.

Can you recommend a non heating chaff for him as he is on Readigrass at the moment and I think its to heating for him? It was fine when he was in work and fit, but now he is out for two hours a day on a sandpit and only ridden four or five times a week for 20-30 mins in walk following injury. I am thinking about dengi hifi light, or good doer.

Also is Barley water heating? I.e the juice from the boiled barley - the barley is fed to the hunters and the others get the water from it so its mixed into a feed so they can have a hot meal in the afternoon.

I think it is, but have been told catergorically its not. I believe it acts as a fast energy release.

I know that barley itself can have very.. energetic effects on horses. Not sure about the water from barley.

For a horse with a tonne of energy like that, I'd just be feeding Hi Fi Lite or Hi Fi Good Do-er. Does he even need hard feed? Or is it to keep him quiet at feed time?

Its to mix his pink powder, Magic and joint supplement in.

He is also on 1/2 sachet of bute in the one feed.

He is having half a mug of pasture mix to use it up, a mug of pony nuts and a large handful of readigrass in each feed. Shooting off to the feed merchants now after work, so will get Good Doer.

Anyone else re: the barley water?

Look at Agrobs, you could feed the Aspero instead of chaff and pop a handful of the museli in for a bit of flavour. The feed is fabulous and low in sugars and starch. Almost our entire yard has changed to it and the horses have calm energy and look well on it. I was always taught barley was fast release and if it's the water won't it have all the natural sugars in it?

It is a myth that warm food is needed by horses. I would be tipping the barley water away and feeding a horse that is having little to no exercise ad lib hay, soaked to maintain a healthy airway.

Hi, I went to my feed merchants last night and after a brief discussion with them about whether Good Doer or Hi Fi Lite was the least in energy I went with the Good Doer in the end. I will mix it with the Readigrass and gradually increase the amount of Good Doer until his stomach becomes used to it, and also to use the readigrass up - there isn't much left anyway.

Adorable Alice - our merchant doesn't stock Agrobs :( I have heard its a really good feed.

He is already on Magic. Think he is feeling very fit and because he has this injury he has gone from working fairly hard, to walking around the menage for 20 mins every day. And he is only out for 2 hours a day in the sandpit, apparently he's been running round there which isn't great for his suspensory branch injury!
