I am a hunting virgin desperate to find a ride to get out hunting on occassionally. I know there are companies that hire out horses but I am sure there must be people around with horses that they would like to be hunted. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Hampshire, berkshire area...

Thanks

Trouble is so many things can go wrong for both hunt-virgin horse and hunt-virgin rider. Knowing the etiquette, keeping you and the horse safe, knowing when the horse has nearly run on empty and not just running on adrenaline etc. It's a big risk for a horse owner to take.

It's great fun, don't get me wrong. I love it. Try putting some adverts up and see what response you get locally though. But I'd personally just ring your local hunt up and see if they can arrange something, with a nice seasoned hireling that's not going to give you a day from hell pratting around and someone to stick with you and show the ropes for the day :) It's not cheap mind...day tickets for over 18's with my old hunt was 100 per day. Something like 20-30 for juniors though. With a hireling on top of that, it adds up....but is a great experience and worth it!

Thanks Binky01, Yes the hope would be to start out with a horse that has hunted. As I am still a student, it was more the hope of not having to hire a horse but borrow someone's that has already done some hunting, if for some reason they can't get out on it. I think I will look into at least getting a hireling for one outing. I think I still qualify as a junior for many hunts being only 22. Fingers crossed I will get out this year...although with finals approaching etc, I may be waiting until next year now :(

Good points raised so far.
Perhaps the Local Sec. knows someone with an old hunter who you could pay a 'cap' to - as they cant hunt due to human injury or something???

If you had nerves of steel and shoulders of iron I would say take my horse ;) Kidding - Shes finished for the year now :)

I'm sure someone out there is thinking = oh if only somone could ride old freddy out for me...
