Can anyone recommend a horse tonic, is there such a thing

Was told meadowsweet can help with joints, my mare has arthritis and just seems a little dull at the moment. I dont think all this rain we are having helps

I would speak to him again. Explain your concerns, and that you would like to be able to give her one Danillon a day for a month, reducing it to half a satchet to see how she gets on. Most vets are very, very accomodating about this sort of thing, especially when it's a quality of life issue.

However, your vet may be concerned about your experience and so reluctant to prescribe the drugs - understandably.

So - Devils Claw, No Bute (which contains Devils Claw) or the like would be a good way to go. Also adding Cider vinegar to her feed, and I think Linsead (pm PG - I think she uses it for joints).
 
She's having cider vinigar and cod liver oil and has been on extra flex for a year. I have had her for 16 years so dont think I am inexperienced, although never had experience with arthritis I must admit. Have used bute before on my laminitic mare so dont think thats why she was reluctant to prescribe it. She said ' we like to keep them on the very minimum dose, so for the moment just use it to get her shod '
 
In that case definately go back to her and say that you're not happy. Is there another more 'user' friendly vet at the practice??
 
I will give them a ring and try and speak to one of the more experienced vets there. A couple of years back I rang up and asked for bute over the phone for a pulled tendon and they were quite happy to just give it to me without coming out to see the mare, said as I was an old client happy to give it to me. Maybe she's a bit inexperienced
