my edt has recommended we brush horses teeth as some build up and receding gums.tried today but they were not overkeen.daughter wonders whether you can get horse toothpaste as you can for dogs that is meat flavoured {for dogs}.any thoughts,i know this probably sounds crackers as im typing it.

I just use a tiny bit of normal mint toothpaste for my pony. He doesn't really like it but he puts up with it. Will watch this post aswell to see if there's anything better.

I had treats that made my ponies teeth cleaner..well they looked whiter/cleaner after about a third of a tub of them! I thought they were quite good

Nope is the answer!

When we say "it is best to start brushing the teeth", we mean to get a face brush (or similar) and brush the lower incisors in an upward motion and the uppers in a downward motion with water. The reason for doing this is to make sure the diastemas (gaps that older horses develop between the teeth) dont get feed packed between them causing gingivitis or worse, periodontal disease. No need for toothpaste at all!

Your probably wondering what you can do to stop feed packing between the premolars and molars at the back of the mouth? Best thing would be to stick a hose in both the left and right hand side of the mouth every evening to flush out feed. That will help.
