Hi All,

I am currently loaning a very long 17'2 and would love to be out competing with him this summer. But I have a problem getting him anywhere! Does anyone know of any decent and reliable trailer hire companies to investigate that would accomodate a large horse, possibly for summer hire?
Or any second hand models that I could look into buying in the future (cheap as possible!) It needs to be a trailer as I cannot drive a lorry on my driving licence :(

Thanks :)

My Father owns the car I would be using to pull the trailer so I guess he will be towing it for a while!

Thanks for that info its really helpful.

Do you have any information about the trailer hire?

:)

Only a B, does this limit me to what trailer I can tow?
Im afraid you will have to take a B & E test if you want to tow a trailer
Thats not correct

You can tow a trailer on a B licence BUT there are strict rules

The GVW of the towing vehicle and the plated MAM of the trailer must not add up to more than 3500 kgs

The plated MAM of the trailer must not be more than the unladen/kerb weight of the towing vehicle

What vehicle (exact model please) are you intending to tow with?
What is the weight of the horse?

Check out the link in my signature to the HHO TOWING CLINIC foe more info and examples of B licence towing

I'll assume DAD passed his car test before 1997 so he will have B+E and can be a supervising driver for you because you already have a B+E provisional on the paper part of your licence
You will need L plates front of vehicle and rear of trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner - call your current insurer

You will then be able to tow fully loaded with DAD next to you if the set up is for B+E

Give me info on the car and I might be able to recommend a single horse trailer which you can tow on your own

In the Bucks area (Chilterns).

He is 700kg (ish).

The car would be a Shogun sport automatic and yes he does hold a B+E licence and has experience pulling a trailer, due to insurance and the info you have given me I think it would be him pulling the trailer for this summer until I can sort out my licince (lucky him!)

Any info would be great thanks

Using that vehicle it would certainly need a B+E licence but why let DAD drive when you could and gain valuable experience????

Yeah, this is true.
So as long as I speak to my insurance company I should be able to pull the trailer with someone in the car that has a B+E licence?

As long as they are over age 21 and had B+E for 3+ years - YES :D

If you are the insured B+E learner driver for the vehicle and trailer then there is no requirement in law for the superviser to be - its a strange law that does not require the supervising driver to be insured but thats the way it is

In the above senario the supervising driver CANNOT drive the vehicle even if you get into problems

Great, thanks for all the info, really useful. Now I just need to find one!

:)
To hire one I assume you want it to be local so .... WHAT AREA OF THE UK ARE YOU IN?

If looking to but one for your 700kg 17+ HH horse then what is your budget?

I am in Buckinghamshire/The Chilterns.

I suppose budget wise I would prefer something as cheap as possible (under 2000) But because of his size I understand it may end up costing me more to get something safe and reliable.

Can I hi-jack please?

My mum and dad own and drive a 53 plate Land Rover Discovery 2.5 TDI. They both passed their licences before 1997 and Dad has a lot of experience towing.
Our trailer is an Ifor Williams 510 and we have a handful of big horses.

So... if I get this right... If Daddykins or Mummykins sit next to me and I keep the trailer weight under 3.5t (the cars maximum towing capacity anyway i believe) then I'm allowed to tow on L plates?

Our local trailer driving learning course is about £1500 for a weeks long learning with a test at the end.

Thanks!!! :)

If the insurance is happy then YUP YES YAY :D

BUT BUT BUT - the HB510 has a MAM of 2584 so that is the max weight when loaded and not the 3500 towing capacity
The trailer is 1000 unladen so the max it can be loaded with is 1584 kgs

PS that 1500 for the towing course and test is for a 4 full days training with test on day 5
If you shop around and especially if you have experience then I'll bet you can do it with half a day training and test the next day - cost about £400 ish

The B+E test
No medical or theory test required
Read a number plate from a certain distance
VIDEO - Show Me Tell Me Questions - usually 5
The next three can be in any order:-
VIDEO - Reversing Exercise (old measurements - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
VIDEO - Uncouple/couple up - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
One hour road drive - includes the independant drive and is done virtually the same as the basic car test
