I'm needing to move my horse from North Anston Sheffield to Cresswell notts, this Friday but I'm struggling to find someone that hires trailers. We normally use Parklands but they have decided that any one with a driving license after 1997 can't tow a trailer even though it says it's fine on the Gov website. So any help as to where we can hire would be appreciated. Many thank Clare x

They are likely to be correct but not for that reason

The plated GVW of your towing vehicle added to the plated MAM of the hire trailer must not total more than 3500 kg on a B only licence

I bet that you do not have a low enough GVW on your vehicle and if you have then they do not have a trailer with a low enough plated MAM

The odds that you have a low GVW and they have something like a single horse trailer already down plated to fit in with the 3500 law is going to be as likely as winning the lotto

Well looks like we have won the lottery ☺ as my husband has given more details to them and everything is ok n we have hired a trailer. Thank goodness as my old girl is desperate to be in a stable x

ARE YOU CERTAIN YOU ARE LEGAL from the info I posted?

If not within the 3500 max plated MAM limit you will invalidate any insurance so risk losing your vehicle as well as getting a fine and points for not driving in accordance with the licence

PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK

Better still - are you willing to give me the name of the trailer hire company so I can call them because it is so unlikely they will have a trailer ok for B only licence towing - I really do not want you to be towing illegally!

I got them = http://parklandsequestrian.co.uk/lorry-hire/

A have called then and they agree with me that have it wrong - they went on the empty weight of the HB510 (1000 kg) instead of the plated MAM which is 2340 kg

They now have my tel number and may call me in the future for the laws on these issues

I spoke to the dvla and as long as the max train weigh don't exceed 3500 then we're fine. All sorted now and we're legal so that ends this thread .

WRONG

The GTW or max train weight is NOT the legal requirement

Tyr asking DVLA again and ask them if its the total of the plated weights which must not exceed 3500 for B towing and they will answer yes

It is the way in which you ask the question which makes the difference

Another way to ask DVLA is ....
I want to tow this on a B licence
My vehicle has a GVW of xxx kg
The trailer has a top plated weight or MAM of xxx kg
Can I tow that legally?

OK ill get my dad to tow, will that enable you to sleep tonight, lol
Good idea but you can tow it with L plates on and the right insurance with Dad at the side of you - if Dad does not drive then he does not need to be insured - only you

OK, thanks for your help
You are welcome

I really did not want you getting into legal hot water

I cannot TELL you what to do - I can only ADVISE you - sometimes a bit strongly maybe .....
