Horse Transport Costs

it depends what you are wanting-shared or individual.

All the companies are different-shared will be cheap as your horse is going on with a minimum of 12 others and will be transported all over the place before reaching you.

Individual is just that-door to door.

From past experience (mind you always horses coming the other way) - prices vary a lot. but be careful who you use as some of them drive all over the place and your horses can be travelling for days and end up sick.

We only use a transporter that does individual.

We have have quite a few friends that used shared and were told a whole load of porkies as to when the horses were to be picked up and brought to them. One of my friends ended up with a massive vets bill as the horse somehow developed strangles and due to the 14 day exclusion on illness wasn't covered by insurance!

We use www.jmrt.co.uk and we can travel with our horses which we find reassuring.

We pay more but then its door to door and 15 hours later from holland we have our youngsters in our stables and knowning that they have not been dragged all over the continent-reloaded several times and shared all sorts of germs!

It is down to individual choice though and your budget-but most good transporters accept plastic nowadays!

the big transporters of 10 horse plus are able to offer cheaper rates because of the way the ferry operators charge for lorries....

you take a 10 plus transporter, full, with each horse "paying" £200 per trip...equals £2,000..the cost of putting a lorry on the ferry is £34.00 per metre plus 10.40 each way fuel tax plus vat.....lorry 12 metres equals £503 per trip one way x 2

a little 3 horse box, 7 metres long, at above rates equals £304 just for the ferry trip!!!!!

so thats why the big boys have the upper hand pricewise.

Agree with RHT re why they are cheaper - but remember the big loads are often going all over the shop. 10 horses can mean 10 different places, and then they often pick up on the way along. If you want the cheap and cheerful option this is the way to go, and you may be lucky you might be one of the first ones off. But I would not like to chance it. My ex worked for a big horse transport firm and he told me the routes that they used to travel - unbelievable!!!! Apparently when they have 2 drivers they can drive for almost 24 hours in a stretch just stopping to feed and water. i would NOT want my horse on a lorry that long.

I would rather go without something so i could pay for proper travel for my horse - cheaper than a big vet's bill.

I brought my horse over from south Germany. I was looking for a shared transport, so that she didnt feel too lonely and scared. But I always asked how many horses they transport. At the end she was alone on the first part and later with only one other horse and I paid only the shared rate of 1000€. I was really pleased with the service, they were really nice and I had the chance to travel with them as I didnt want her to travel alone not knowing what they do with my horse.
