Horse Travelling (long journey)

Hiya

I need some advice please. Im travelling my horse about a 7-8 hour journey in the UK in about 3 weeks time. I need some advice.

I would like to stop at a halfway house or something like to give him a break, do these places exist, and how do i find one?

I have travelled horses before but not for this length of time! I would prefer not to stay overnight anywhere, but will if i have to.

Any advice would be welcome.

Not sure about halfway houses but I'm sure if you tried to find a riding school or large yard somewhere en route you would find somewhere to rest.
 
maybe contact gillies, they would probably know of places on your route you could stable overnight if need be.
 
is the horse going to be travelling in a trailer or a horsebox? i'm not sure about the former, but i have travelled horses for longer than that in 1 go in a horsebox. when stopping for diesel i check them, of course, and i make sure they have soaked hay all the time so they don't get dehydrated.
 
To be honest I'd just crack on and not worry about having a major rest stop.
During the summer I travelled 2 polocrosse ponies from Milton keynes to just north of Alnwick (which is way up in Northumberland) and back, that was a 7 hour trip each way. On each journey we had two stops of about 20-30 minutes. We travelled up on the monday, did 3 hours of hard work Tues/Weds/Thurs then played in the top grade of the tournament on Sat/Sun and came home Sun night, my chap came bounding down the ramp fresh as a daisy when we got home at just after midnight

I think the seem to cope with it alot better than we give them credit for

Or ask on here am sure some HHOers would help . Can do M4 J10 after a week or two's time as re-doing fencing at the mo, so long as you don't have a BIG lorry (too many trees in narrow road) Tea and cakes/biscuits alway available!

I need to check my journey really! I know it by sight but not actual roads.

Thank you for all the fab advice, will make sure i soak my hay and check insurance/breakdown etc.

Its nice to know some people have done it all in one go though.

My plan is to go at the least busy times of the day which i think would be over night to help keep travelling time to a minimum, but im not sure how he would cope in a trailer on the motorway with car lights and them zooming past. Has anyone got any experience of this or advice on travelling times? It will be over a weekend though which should help

I have travelled roughly this length of journey norfolk to far side of Wales on my own with my horse in the lorry and we stopped roughly every 2-3 hrs to offer water but really he was fine. We stopped for 20 mins each time but to be honest he travels so well he just went to sleep. It is better i thought ot push on and get there is roads are good motorwasy and A roads than drag it out. we had about an hour each end of single carriageway roads and B roads but i gave him a lick in the lorry, opened the door betwen living and horse area so he can hear radio and me and i put a leadrope with a chain on him so i can hear him move his head and know he is o.k and he was fine. a bit of a party really turned radio up so he could hear and its just you and neddy on the road. take it easy but thewy will be o.k and no i did NOT unload halfway even though BHS says to. didnt fancy unloading in a motorway sevrice station!!! go for it.
 
Thank you for your advice, Im going to see how he goes i think, be prepared with a stop in case he needs one, but try and push on.
