I rode out this morning and my mare tripped over several times during the course of the hack.

SOme of it was on fairly level ground other times not.

Is this a schooling issue as she is 7 but very late backed.
What do you suggest?

one of our horses used to do this a lot - it was down to a shoulder injury he sustained team chasing when he was about 12....we used to put him on Bute, which helped. he used to get so upset about tripping, would throw his head up thinking he about to get a smack! i hope that yours isnt down to a similar prob, but it does sound very like him!

When was your horse last shod? Does she have rolled toes? Do you ride her in a contact or on the buckle of the reins allowing her to get on her forehand? Is she striding out or shuffling along slowly?

There are a few things that can cause horses to trip. Is it just today she's done this or is it an ongoing problem? Has it gradually gotten worse? Has she ever fallen when tripping (eg. onto her knees, face).

If it continues it would be worth speaking to your farrier about trying her in rolled toe (or similar) shoes to make sure her toes aren't too long and to ease the breakover of her feet. It can be a sign of more serious internal foot problems, if she continues to trip and you are worried then speak to a vet.
