my horse is driving me mad rubbing her tail/bum. She was doing it that much the other day it looked like someone had singed her tail. I regularly put no rub on it and keep it clean.
I also keep her rugged with a tail flap on the rug to protect it the best I can and as I origanally thought she was being bitten to keep insects etc away.
I asked the vet about pinworm, but he said the wormer i used should have got rid of any pinworm.
It is difficult to know if she is trying to rub her tail or her bum cheeks are they have been bald as well.
I can't see any lice on her and she tends to leave her mane alone.
Thoughts anyone?

Certainly sounds like pinworm to me whatever the vet said. Which wormer did you use? The old fashioned ones are best and may need multiple doses over time, plus really stringent hygiene measures. Send a sellotape test to Westgate? Also loads of advice there.

thanks Borderreiver thats what I was thinking, surely cant be insects at this time of year. I believe it was strongid P - but will check, sure it was double dose for tapeworm.
Never seen any evidence around her bottom though. Will go and have a look at the westgate site

Some people have had success using neem oil round the bottom area for wormer-resistant pinworm, there were some posts on here about it if you have a search.

When my CB arrived she came with a bottle of ivermectin as she'd been treated for mites. It did flare up again and was duly treated with the ivermectin and I also wormed in case of pinworm. Tail still looked like a toilet brush and she would rub the skin either side raw. As I was sure there were no longer any parasites I used a tube of bog standard hydrocortisone 1% from the pharmacy and she never rubbed her tail again. I think after an infection they can get caught in an itch/scratch cycle which the steroid cream can break. Might be worth a try if you are sure there are no parasites. Remember to tell the pharmacist it's for your own skin though!

Pin worm mine was rubbing bad if you look on the violet website they do a really good write up on what wormer treatment is good for which worms, think is vectamin for pin worm less than £10 and it stopped my horse from itching its ass, think this wormer does hair skin and pin worm well worth a go and eliminate the worming problem xxxxx
