Ive had my mare for 6 yrs and never had any trouble with her before but tyed up this morning after a hack round the road very shocked she if hunting fit so this is a bit of a shock the only thing i can think that would caus this is this is the first year shes been on haylage and she gets 1scoop of barley 1scoop of sbeet 1scoop of alfalfa and 1/2 scoop of mix i think she may be getting two much protine has any body else heard of this happaning

It won't be excessive protein causing the tying up - excessive starch or sugars maybe....so yes it could be the haylage, I would probably avoid the barley as well.

What about other factors? Is she clipped? Had a recent holiday? Had a stressfull 'happening' recently?

My mare tied up whilst on a high protein diet.... (when fed alpha a oil at 16% protein)....there are some links to suggest protein fed in excess can cause a horse to tie up, but nothing has been properly proven...all I know is I will not feed my horse anything with protein over 12% now!!

Is she being kept stabled at all? Is she warmed up thoroughly when ridden?

Her diet is not one that I would provide to a horse thats ties up...so could be a factor...what mix is she on? the sugar beet, alpha and hayledge are not great for a horse that ties up....is this the first time she has done it? what were her ck and ast levels?

Ive spoken to the nutritionest at d&h and we have changed her diet to 1 sutable for a horse that ties up but is in heavy work she was staying in for long periods of time as the fields were very wet but shes bieng turned out all day in the lunging area and all her feeds are under %10 in proitien and shes getting soyoil for extra energy
