Im in need of some advice as what to do with my horse, as I am due to start uni in Sept.

He is the most brilliant, friendly, beautiful horse you could ever wish for and as I have had him for 5 years now and grown up with him Im in a bit of a flap as what to do for the best.

I have advertised him for loan, but the people who came forward weren't exactly the kind I was hoping for!

So if I sold him (prob for around £8500) do you think he would go to a better home than he would if I loaned him?

Also I dont want the stress of having him back if the loan arrangement goes wrong, you hear so many horror stories!

Cant take him 2 uni with me so thats not an option. I dont really want to sell him because hes one of those once in a lifetime kind of horses, but its looking like im going to have to!!

I really dont know what to do gor the best so any opinions from those who have been in a similar situation much appreciated.

I wouldnt sell him. Maybe you should put him out on loan a month or two before you go to uni. Then you could keep your eye on him and know he is safe and well looked after.

I would be so picky when looking for someone to loan my horse. Such a hard thing to do, but there are people out there who are lovely and would give your horse a fab home. Good luck in finding someone

Carry on looking if you cant take him with, the right person is probably just around the corner who will treat him as their own, and you do still have a bit of time to find someone!

Is it quite definite that you can't take him with you? When my daughter went to uni she found after her first year that there was a livery stables accessible via an easy bus ride; she arranged with one of the other liveries that they would turn out in the morning and she rode in the afternoon. But it all depends where you will be - if its London, of course much less possible! But I thought I'd just tell you about our experience as we had taken it for granted that it wouldn't be possible to have her (adored) horsey at uni - and then found it was!

Aw, i am in EXACTLY the same boat! have had my mare for 5 years and cannot take her to uni with me. i am going to loan her, as i just can't bear the thought of letting her go. sorry, i am not much help but know how you're feeling so if u wanna chat, feel free to pm me.

i took my mare to uni with me - its not always easy having your pony there but its well worth it.

other wise i would advertise for someone to keep him ticking over in term time so you can ride in the hols.

I am now in my third year of uni and decided to keep my two horses. I thought about taking them to uni but this would have ment looking after them daily around full time lectures. Having weighed up the options I decided to leave the horses at my parents farm and drive home at the weekends to ride. Had I taken them with me they would have only been ridden at weekends most the time anyway. It has been hard not being able to keep them very fit but I will never regret it. Would never have sold them.

How about finding someone to loan/share your horse in term time near the Uni so you can keep in close touch, and then either leave him there in the hols or take him back with you. You never know, a Mum/Dad who has to look after the kids full time in the hols might jump at the chance of having a lovely horse on loan while the kids are at school.

This may not help you but im in my 1st year at Leicester and i have kept my 3 horses.
They live at home and are kept ticking over by our YM who was appointed by my mum for the pure reason that i'd left home and needed to keep my horses. I visit home as much as i can and i also ride for the uni riding club. Next year i'll be bringing my big mare down here as i want to start eventing her so the most logical solution is to have her at a local event training yard where i ride.
