My horse has been living out since March, its the time to come in, he has been in 1 week and isn't settling at all, in fact he is getting worse. He can see 3 other horses who are all very settled and calm. He has his hay, feed, play ball with nuts, like-it but nothing seems to interest him. He was stabled all last winter with no real issues, but his bed is awful, rearing up and I am really feeling for him right now as he seems so stressed out. He is normally out from 6.30am until 6pm, then gets ridden and put to bed about 7.30.

Any advise, suggestions?

My daughters pony can be like this wide eyed and wild as she calls it. We have him on relax me now and he is 95% better has odd moment of walking but nothing as bad. This was surgested by a ex vet who said he is like a child on e numbers he just can't help himself

Give it time, he will settle. My mare is always like this for a few weeks when she first comes in but she gets over it. In an ideal world they would live out 24/7 but that's not always possible :(

Probably a daft question , but could he live out? or at least until it gets colder and the days get really short...Paddy used to be a bit the same , never really settled and the bed would be horrendous in the morning , now he's out full time with a shelter and a pal and he's a different horse mentally. Are you at a livery yard? If not you could try a different approach , if you have a yard that can be made secure , you could leave his stable door open and let him have in and out , obviously you'll need to make sure he can't eat anyone elses hay , he'll soon realize that he's better off going into his own box , i had to do this with my old mare as she was terrified of being trapped in , but when she could go in and out of her own accord , she soon learned that being in wasn't so terrible and she's been fine to shut in ever since. Sorry this turned into a ramble!

Agreed it would properly for him to live out if it's possible.

I would start by putting him again then just bring him in for a feed, brush and pop him back out, hopefully he will then settle.

How about a stable mirror, even though he can see other horses it may help as the mirror horse will be closer to him and not over the other side of the yard.

You could also try a calmer for a wee bit, see if that makes a difference.

Have you checked his feed hasn't got too much starch, protein and sugars in it. With him being out it may not of shown up as he would of been walking all the time and 'burning it off'

I had an issue when stabling my ex racer mare, she was constantly pacing and calling for her fieldmate, even if I just put her in for a feed then turned her out, she was so freaked out she wouldn't eat.

Since then she's been turned out in her paddock alone, she's much more settled, she has chums on three sides but she's no longer attached to one other horse to the point of being a bit deranged when separated.

Unfortunately, he cannot stay out 24/7 from last week hence the reason him being stabled. He has a horse to his left that he can see and touch and they kiss each other.

He was never like this last year so wondered what was up really. I think il give it another week or two and if no difference I may try that relax me as ive heard it is very good, he is only out with one pal in a large field, he only gets fed chaf light and carrots and a nut ball, same as last year.

He is still not rugged as I am hoping to clip this week and then will rug him, maybe he is telling me he is too cold or something, his ears are always warm and he is hot when I bring him in so not sure.

Sometimes I wish they could talk

Hi

Is it not his field mate he is next to in the stable? My horse threw a wobbly when brought in as no one from her herd was near her.

Could this be his issue?

Well, his field mate was next to him until mid week, he now has a new neighbour but his field mate is opposite him like a triangle. He has been like it all week and acting the same all week, not since his mate has moved, so I don't think it is that
