Hi,

Im looking to buy a really safe childs pony, doesnt have to be anything special, can pop a few jumps, the main priority is very safe! There seems to be a lot of variation on prices of these kind of horses, Im looking for something quite young and dont mind bringing it on for the kids. How much are people paying for this kind of pony?

Thanks!

Young and safe very rarely sit together in kids ponies or any other type of equine.

You can go to any low end sale and pick up a young pony for a tenner and then put the work in yourself. At the other end of the scale, the best place to source a reliable pony is through word of mouth at the pony club and be prepared to pay a substantial amount of money.

I bought two Welsh A's many years ago for two very young children to start their equine relationship with.
Both ponies had done decades of pony club with many families. They were both characters and one of them delighted in biting me on a regular basis, the other one had a perfect aim for kicking my knee when I turned him out.......but with the children both of them were utter saints and put up with everything, including having driving harness put on and towing the kids around a snowy field on a piece of MDF board.

I paid £100 each for them, one was 23 and the other 25 years old. Both has signs of past laminitis and one had wind issues. Manageable problems for me. The children were both on 13.2h and in pony club teams when the time came to say goodbye to the ponies, both were over 30 and Timmy still managed to sink his teeth in my arm as I held his head for the huntsman. The children are now grown and one is a doctor, years fly by but those two ponies who terrorised me and where guardian angels to the children will never be forgotten.

You can spend any amount depending on what you are looking for. Saw a cracking jumping 12.1 on here yesterday if the child is competing, for £1900. Would be sorely tempted if my daughter wasn't 4 and has three to ride already :o :D

My daughters pony is what you describe 90% of the time. The worst she does is stop mid canter! She's 14yo and a 12.2 palomino with no specific breeding. I paid £1000 for her via the pony club website. I think they originally asked for more but got no interest when they asked that price they had quite a few people coming to see her. At the end if the day a pony's value is what the owner is prepared to take and what you are prepared to pay. Decide what your top amount is and start to view/try some ponies.

Depends how big, budget and where you are, I know of a couple of lovely ponies, well produced and nice quality but not very big, assuming they are still for sale.....
