Any ideas for a horse that is very fussy in the mouth. Currently in a lozenge eggbutt snaffle and caveson noseband. Is fairly well schooled (competes up to Elem) but is and has always been very fussy in the mouth. Would rather sit behind the bit (so lots of work on getting her to move forward from behind) but she does tend to bob her mouth and lips which can be distracting. Any advise on schooling ideas or different bits to try? She is not strong at all but can go a little on the forehand.

I would find something without a joint/s, either follow ycbm's suggestion or look for a mullen-mouthed bit. Many horses prefer them to the feel of something constantly moving in their mouth.

I'm having a lot of success with mine in a Bomber Happy Tongue, which is dressage legal in spite of a very big port.
.

Just switched my mare to a happy tongue after vet chiro noticing she was getting tight in hyoid muscle and also her flinging her head in canter and dropping behind the contact.
So far so Good, much happier and stiller. Vet chiro back next month to see if there’s any difference.

I say it every time someone posts a bit question on here...try a bit fitter! You wouldn't plonk any old saddle on your horses back without getting a saddler to fit so I'm not sure why it's not as common to get a bit correctly fitted. It saved me so much in both money and time trying various different things. I'd never have ended up with a single joint as was always told they were harsher than a lozenge but for my mare with her big fleshy tongue it's actually kinder as it takes up less space. Within a few strides of getting on with it in I knew my mare was happier with it than her previous bit.

If nothing else, it's really interesting getting on with a few different bits and comparing how your horse goes in them.

Have to say bit fitters arent nearly so common or easy to find, but it’s a good suggestion. I’ve messaged two but no luck yet in getting an appt.

I recently did a Hilary Vernon Clinic. I found it really interesting and would recommend it. I did buy a bit but I was happy with the improvement in my boy. I didn't have a specific issue, just wanted to learn more about biting as I feel it's a topic I don't know enough about.

I don’t have a bit fitter close to me that I had heard good things about (was quite negative review towards them) but we do however have the bit bank.

I spent hours on the phone to them and they helped whittle it down to a selection of a few bits to trial. Tried 2 which were a total disaster.

Now have 2 which he is very happy in. One for schooling (dressage legal) and one for faster work. Both bomber happy tongue!
