My mare has had a few days off since Thursday due to having some physio after pulling her shoulder and neck in the field. I got her in this morning and left her in until about 3pm. When I went back up to ride I got her out and tacked her up to hack out, when I got on she went to jog but was really limping lame on her near hind so I got off and took her back round to the yard to trot her up. She is fine in walk, maybe very slightly short, but really limping and nodding in trot. We have checked for the obvious there is no heat or swelling, she had been stood in the stable for6 hours so would've thought swelling would be there if any. She isn't tender anywhere, we checked her feet and she seemed fine, no pulse nothing! I haven't got a clue what to think, she is fine and bright in herself and seem comfortable she actually rested her good front leg and opposite back leg so she is weight bearing fine. The vet is coming out in the morning and she is in tonight. Any ideas? Really worried now could it be Navicular?? HELP!!!

Well done if you got this far.

Navicular is very unlikely, it presents as an intermittent lameness, almost always affecting the front feet, and the horse doesn't like to take weight on the heels. It's the last thing I would associate with your horse's symptoms.

Maybe an abscess brewing? Let's hope so.

I think it could be due to her other problem she might have put more weight on that limb to ease the pain in her shoulder , might be muscle, think navicular occurs in front feet, never heard it in back, give her a few days if the doesnt improve call the vet , Dont worry too much yet, my horse went lame and it really does worry you , but she came right in a week, good luck please update so i can look back on this ,

Thanks for both your replies. She is lame on her front leg, I thought it did look like her foot but we have looked and got the hoof testers out and nothing

I rang the physio and she said she doesn't think it is anything to do with the treatment she gave her, she treated her last Thursday. I've got the vet coming today anyway just to be on the safe side. I will be going up soon anyway so will have another look.
I know i'm jumping to conclusions i.e navicular, but you just don't know what to think when there is nothing obvious, I'd rather her have a big gash! I'll keep you updated.

MY boy became alil lame when ridden..I had everyone you could think of out.. i was told it was his shoulders... his back... his legs... I had the vet out which said to take him to new market... we later found out he had pain to the Navicular area.. he was treated really well they changed his shoes and now he is sound as a pound... but unable to do anything on hard ground like jumping or trotting on the road...

I'm know what your feeling thou! i just wanted a big gash too! but he came right in the end took me a year thou...

keep us posted thou!

Sudden lameness though is atypical. We have had two horses with navicular . It is intermittent, slight and incidious - initially anyway. Let us know the outcome of your investigations. Dont start worrying yet - although I know you will!!!

Hi Just read your post and sounds more or less the same as what my girl is going through (they even both fell lame on the same day!)

I assumed it was her shoulder, but have been advised by my vet and physio that shoulder injuries are extreamly rare in horses and he if focusing on suspensory, pedal and fetlock.

I have not attempted to ride my horse as she has been lame in walk and wanting to walk on grass and not gravel. She has been rested with limited turnout and has imporved from last week.

Which leg is she lame on and is it worse on a particular rein?

would love to know what your vet though, keep us updated!

I'm a bit late with the update.... my car decided to break too

! Vet came on Tuesday and was very suprised hpw lame she was in trot as she lloks sound in walk and on tight circles. She did have some swelling come up on her off front leg around her fetlock. She was alittle unsure where the pain wwas actually coming from as her feet were a little sore with the hoof testers too. She's wondering wether she may have stood on a stone and twisted her fetlock. She took her shoe off and told me to poultice it and see if anything comes out. She has put her on antibiotics and danillon. Last night she was still as lame, the swelling had gone down but there were some black in the poultice and a foul smell so I'd say she now has thrush. There was no sign of thrush at all before so I don't know wether this is going to be from the poulticing. The vet is coming out tomorrow to check her and she is also going to bring her scanner. So fingers crossed for tomorrow.

I think my car is also on its last wheels! We have quite a few similarities!

Your girl was sore in the feet, which mine dosnt appear to be... and my vet really did pinch hard!

She seemed a little better last night, though a few short strides on the gravel, but absolutly fine on the grass. I am applying cool gel and clay to her legs and bandaging in the stable... i also have my farrier back today to take a look at her feet, maybe with the shoes off so he may find something? She is very footy when walked?

please keep us posted on what the vet says today, fingers crossed it is something minor and easily fixable for the both of them! x

Another update...... Vet came yesterday, she is till sound in walk, ok for the first two steps of trot but then gets progressively (sp?) worse after that to the point where she stops. Poulticing has got a bit of 'goo' out but nothing major. vet dug out some of her foot out where she is tender but no pus at all. She is now going in on Tuesday for nerve blocks, her fetlock is swollen and tender too so hopefully nerve block will help show exactly where pain is. She is also going to be scanned and Xrays. Vet is worried incase it could be a fracture in her foot
