Does anyone else follow this? It's a US Facebook page which I joined a while back after being pointed to it. The poster asks a questions / posts a photo and vets (mainly U.S. based) respond. Non vets are banned from responding so you can lurk in the background.

Some of the cases are awful! Makes me incredibly glad for two things. 1 - we can slaughter horses on UK soil without transporting them 1000s of miles (US horses get shipped to Canada apparently) & 2 - pathetically grateful for having vets who are not hours and hours away.

So many of the posters have got horses from 'kill pens'. Many come with injuries and FB seems to be their main medical source. Some nasty ones recently which should have been an emergency callout but no local vet offered that as a service, so they came online.

It's all a bit gruesome really - but in that car crash 'can't stop watching' sense....

I've been following it and would agree, it seems rare to get a vet out quickly in many cases that I would also class as an emergency - either due to geographical location, lack of availability of vets or in some cases a lack of urgency on the owners part who think turning to FB is cheaper and easier.

It makes you grateful for good accessible vet care at least!

the posts do seem to range from the benign to the horrific with not much inbetween!

They also seem to keep a lot of horses going that I don't think we would... the founder/abscessing elderly horse the last couple of days seemed a case in point, though they pop on the hoof groups too (HYPP QH with unmanageable lami, owners wanting to know they had tried everything being a recent one).

I watch this page with interest too! It does make me incredibly grateful that my vet is never any more than an hour away if i am in dire need. I saw a post on there (or might have been a different one actually) a while back from someone who's horse had horrendous colic. Her vets didn't do emergencies and were 4 hours away anyway, and the only vet she could get hold of couldn't come until the morning. Such a horrible situation for horse and owner
