Went to see Arab. He was very sweet, if a little tubby. Moved nicely but I felt he was too long and sloping in the pasterns. Obviously not been handled a great deal recently. Worst thing was he couldn't have been more than 14.2hh. Guy insisted he was 158cm, which is 15.2 - 15.3hh. Short of getting out a tape measure and calling him a liar what can you do? Also had a look at the 3 yo while we were there - he was very nice, much taller and finer but in dire need of a foot trim and also rather cow hocked. I don't have the facilities to break a youngster plus I want something I can ride now - and tall enough for my OH too.

So the search continues

guy sounds odd - if he doesn't know how big he is.... - I probably wouldn't bother tbh, especially if there's plenty wrong with it

people really do lie about horses heights though! i went to see a supposed 13.2hh, we measure it at 12.2hh so god knows what measuring tape they had been using! hope you find something soon

Totally agree about heights, think some people stick a pin in!!! We even had a vet who guessed that the 14 hand mare was 15 hands!! We now have different vets tho that was not the reason.

I went to view a horse a few years ago, he was advertised in H&H & was at a fantastic private yard. He was advertised as 15h2" & I actually walked past him in his stable as he was actually 16h1" & possibly a little more. We tried him & bought him & still have him. He's a wonderful horse. When I asked them on the yard about his size they just said 'We have't got a measuring stick'. This was quite strange as the yard was like something out of a James Bond Movie & they had everything...............apparantly no height stick though

my welsh that i recently bought was advertised at 14.2hh, he's 4 yrs old and just got around to measuring him after having him 4 months he's only just 14.1hh.

Happened to my last welsh as well i think i better take a measuring stick with me next time . . .

I think people guess with heights - went to view a 16.2 the other day that was barely 15.3hh!

Old YO offered us a 16.1 to school on and sell for OH while his mare was out of work - got there to find a barely 15.1hh

I think when people know what you're looking for they make the height up to suit

Looked at numerours 'full up 148cms' ponies when I was looking for a pony for my final year - ended up taking measuring stick with us - ranged from 13.3-15.2

My measuring stick is my OH! I measured him to the shoulder, ear and top of head and then get him to stand next to the withers of any prospective horse (it's less 'in your face' than a tape

). Funny thing was, as we drove up I saw the guy getting the horse out into the field and thought, 'Ooooh, not bad!' But it turned out the lad was only a little bit taller than me (5ft 2)!

I've sent OH off today with a list of numbers for our Spanish friend to call, so we will see what happens.
