Hi

Wondering if anyone can help, am thinking I perhaps ought to call the vet on Monday but not sure!

My gelding has been weeing more than normal, and seems massively uncomfortable and reluctant to go forward when he needs to go. He is not keen on 'going' when ridden but has done a few times when he gets desperate! I had thought it was perhaps just hot weather, drinking more, summer grass etc, but then the other evening, he had a wee in his stable right before riding, so I thought 'great!', and then did a dressage test (at home, so we hadn't travelled anywhere), rode for a total of an hour I guess. He was really lacking in forwardness in my test and didn't quite seem himself, and then immediately had another enormous wee on going back in his stable.

From what I've read, urine infections are uncommon? - and the urine seems normal in terms of smell, colour and so on.

I will call the vet on Monday for advice and a visit, but wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience?

That was the presenting symptom when my old mare was diagnosed with Cushings, it was the Insulin Resistance which accompanies it. I'd keep an eye on how he does over the weekend and if he is still the same, get the vet.

Is he on steroids??? as steroids make them pee more - def call the ver as there might be an infection that needs to be treated before it gets worse

My gelding did this last year and i got him tested incase he had a water infection. His results came back clear. this year he started doing the same again. I think its a combination of eating more grass with alot more moisture and not wanting to pee in the field as the ground is hard and splashes him. When he needs a wee when im out hacking he will stop and refuse to go forwards at all. I wrote a thread on here about it actually! i try and make sure i put him back in his stable for a wee before i go out riding. Once hes been on the grass for a while and its less rich he seems to settle down again!

This was also the first sign of Cushings with mine. He started weeing when ridden which was not usual for him.

Hmm, ok! Thanks for all the replies. Hopefully it is just a combination of more grass and rich grass, but I will definitely call the vet to rule out anything more sinister.

I got my horse October 4 years ago. When Spring came he was weeing more and tetchy when he had been very placid. The vet ran a complete set of blood and urine tests etc. It showed crystals in his urine and vet wasn't concerned. The remedy was to give him Vitamin C to make his urine more acidic and therefore break up the crystals. I had been giving him biotin at the time and stopped giving him that. Every spring when the grass comes through he is not as placid. This year the first day I put him on grass he was tetchy and I saw him wee twice that evening and once the next morning where I rarely actually see him wee. He is now on poor grass and hay and he is back to himself and frequency of urination is back to normal.
That's my experience!! If I was you I would buy a sterile urine sample container from the chemist or from the vet if easy -as horse ones will be bigger and if possible take a sample and get tested. If the vet is to get a sample it will involve a catheter which is invasive. The sample needs to be tested as soon as possible. Hopefully nothing to worry about.

Thanks, Max, that sounds similar as I vaguely remember him needing to wee rather a lot last summer too! - and that's really helpful advice, I don't like the idea of a catheter if I can avoid it so will get a sample and take it to the vets.

Urine test came back normal, other than that it was ever so slightly too dilute. So to discuss with vet tomorrow but I think I need to have the Cushing's test done :-/
