My horse has decided (again, after doing this last year for a few months) that it is a good idea to put his feet through the fence, pull back, rip his shoes off and generally get tangled up in the fence with his feet. Just wondering if anyone has any advice which may help stop him doing this?
When it happened last year we tried over-reach boots as we originally thought he was pulling them off by over-reaching but then discovered it was the fence that was the problem.
He has plenty of grazing, company,is a very settled horse and there is no real attraction on the other side of the fence which could explain his interest in hanging about near the fence.
Electric fencing is not an option as he has access to 2 or 3 large fields at any one time and the fields are not my own so I cannot really do much in terms of altering fencing etc (he stays on a family friends small holding).
Any advice would be great! I cant face another summer of him pulling shoes off every week (and neither can my bank balance!!!)

Hmmmmmmmm - only real option is to divide up your paddocks via electric fencing ? Another idea that springs to mind is actually letting him go barefoot, so no shoes to come off... ;) sm x

What she said!

We have two that do this (and two that don't!). Our only solution was to electric fence about a foot or so away from the sheei netting so they couldn't do it. We have now removed most of the netting as it's just not worth the risk of injury but they do seem to still find the bits that are left!!

That is your only option I am afraid, that or changing the fencing but you said you can't do that.

He went barefoot over the winter and was fine to ride in the field but feet wont stand up to roadwork etc. Have tried various makes of horse hoof boots (boa etc) but none fit his feet. So this makes barefoot riding hard.
Fencing off/electric fencing is really not possible as the lady who owns the small holding does not want her own sheep etc to have limited access to grazing, and as she is so generous in letting me keep him there for free, I dont want to rock the boat by asking to change fencing etc. I also couldnt really afford to fence off even 1 field due to the size. Fencing off a smaller part would cause problems due to other animals (sheep, donkey etc) who also graze in it
