doing a horse for someone who is a saint to ride, wonderful to lead but a total sod 80% of the time if tied up.

some days you can brush & tack up with the minimum amount of moving about, other days he breaks the twine, will not stand still & is a total git until you have saddle/bridle on, then he is fine

tips to help get him to stop buggering off when tied please

someone had the same problem on here, and somebody else suggested tieing to a tail bandage, so it stretched but it dosent break - might be worth a try?

when he is in a strop he sticks his head up so you can not get the bridle on, being 17.2hh id he knows he is bigger & stronger

was thinking of this, to be fair he doesn't always snap the twine,it is more the lack of standing still which makes things difficult

will try the tail bandage on Sunday

Is he ok to tie up with a headcollar over a bridle - if this is true then this is what I would do in the short term.

If he were mine, I would probably do some work on the bad manners, assuming this is the problem rather than nerves or anxiety.

I have tied to the ring with cross ties a pony that did this. It was a real pest and had never been taught manners and broke everything and could not be left to stand. He was not worried, just bored and used to get his own way.

He learnt that he could not escape or pull back fairly quickly. When he really tried to pull back, he was swished forwards with the end of a long whip - not hitting, just flicking behind him. On standing as he should, it was rewarded with a pat and attention.

However, I would not do this without the owners permission or prescence in case it did something daft and managed to hurt itself.

he is fine with a head collar over the bridle , sometimes it is getting the bridle on that's the problem lol.

i think he has a thing about being taken away from the field , was thinking of tacking him up at the field & see what he is like

yes, i think he gets upset about leaving his friends so gets a bit bolshy to try & go back.

thanks for the ideas guys

If he was mine I'd spend half and hour every day putting his bridle on and off until he was totally bored with being bolshy.

Stand on a stool if necessary. I've found that once they realise that their bolshiness isn't an annoyance to you but is to them, they tend to behave.

Same with the tying up. If it's a boredom habit, not a nervous thing. Tie him up with 6 ropes/baler twine of different lengths so that when one breaks there's more for back up. Will soon get bored with that game too.

Again - would only do this with my own horse not someone elses unless they instigated it
