In September I am going to Uni and taking my pony with me :D

I'm really excited to be taking him but also pretty scared as it will the first time I've had to really look after him by myself - he is currently kept at farm where family and friends all help each other. Basically I want to sort out a list of things I need/want to take with me but I'm not sure where to start!?

Obviously I'll need basic tack/grooming kit/mucking out/buckets but I'm afraid I'll forget the little things that I won't need everyday but when needed are important! What things will I be needing to take with me? Jack will be on DIY livery. Is there any one thing that you couldn't live without? Anybody taken their horse to Uni? Any tips?

First aid kit. You can't rely on someone else having it when you need it. Human stuff as well as horse - first time I needed ours was when I put a knife through my hand opening haylage bales!

Oh... small sharp knife. Opening bales / feed bags etc. Cutting rugs in an emergency. Self defence. (Joke!)

You haven't put haynets or feed bins down? Also we've found a big lockable waterproof truck from B&Q is great to keep all the loose bits together so you're not scrabbling around looking for bits at the end of term.

Scrubbing brush and old towels. For anything really.... water buckets, pony, own boots, his boots....

50ps or whatever you need for the area lights meter etc.

What can't I live without? A gin and tonic probably!

Are you studying equine at uni? and is your horse on campus? I took my horse with me to uni a couple of years ago and really enjoyed having her with me. She was on full lively around 10 min drive away from campus at a small private livery yard. If your horse is on DIY off campus I will warn you tho, late night parties/all night drinking and basically the fun of uni can be extremelly difficult when having to travel to see to your horse the next day, combined with studying of course! Also what will happen if you have to go on uni trips - will someone at the yard be able to look after your horse? I assume you have though of these things but i know for sure i would have found it very difficult doing DIY while at uni.

Thanks :D

I would check if you need mucking out gear.

Hmm never thought about this but will definitely check, thanks!

I'm studying Equine Business Management at Hartpury & my pony will be on campus - there are lots of students that keep their horse on livery on campus so I'm sure they will have people to look after horses on trips etc.

I like to have 2 pairs of strirrup leathers and reins just in case!

Also scissors...have 2 pairs, 1 in first aid kit and 1 just for general use. I have my knife at the yard, but it surprises me how often I need scissors...and I can never find them, but that's probably just because I'm very disorganised.

Have fun!

I'd emphasise the need for scissors (:
Sharp ones for trimming feathers, tail etc. always seems to be my problem.

Though you can probably get it when you're there, string/baling twine is very useful to have around (though you will need the scissors too!) (:

Hope you have fun!
