My 27yr old mare has recently become very lethargic very quickly. When I lunge her she normally prances about like a baby and trots/canters the whole time. I lunged her today and i could barely manage a walk out of her :(

She keeps rubbing her head on me really hard and shaking her head. She is also rubbing her head on the walls all the time.

Is this something I should be worried about?

Thanks in advance! :)

Someone I used to know had a horse who was very sensitive around his head and it turned out he had trapped a nerve in his poll. This does sound a little different but different horses will react in different ways. She had thought he was just headshy and persevered for years before finding out the real reason.
If its a sudden change definitely worth looking into.

It might be something as minor as an alllergy but could also be a sign of something far more serious going on. I would get a vet out if it were my horse. Dont like the sound of rubbing her head on the walls, not being alarmist but it really does need an expert vetinary opinion, not internet diagnosis by all us know it alls and would be vets.;)

I would get your vet to look at her, it could be allergies but at her age it may be more serious as horses with liver failure show these symptons as well!

And here was me trying not to alarm the poor owner! :p But you are quite right - this shouldn't be left to wait see.
It's fine :p I'm going to get the vet up ASAP i think as i've just looked up liver disease and she is showing some of the other symptoms such as:
head pressing
weight loss
excessive sun burn
repeated yawning
poor/reduced performance
reduced appetite
poor coat quality
:(:(
