Hello!

I have a cob cross mare who is in her early 20's

She has always been an incredibly good doer and gets a nice thick coat in winter.
We clipped her this year because of our mild winter she was incredibly uncomfortable.

But recently I have noticed she has incredibly dry flaky skin, and her mane and tail have lots of flaky skin and dandruff.

She had feeds over winter but now she is in such a huge field with really rich green grass 24/7 I don't really want to now have to go back to giving her feeds wit lots of oils high in calories and her getting fat! She is still in work but only a couple times a week now with general hacking.

What do people advise using to treat dry skin? I can give her a small feed of chaff to mix but would also appreciate ideas to apply directly to the skin?
I'm slightly concerned whether it now being quite sunny (and the temperatures due to be low 20's here this weekend!) that certain things might cause burns or irritation to the skin making it worse.

Any recommendations would be gratefully appreciated!

Thank you!

My gelding gets exactly like this if he is fed ANY mix at all.

What hard food was she on, just chaff? I highly recommend microsecond linseed for a good coat.

She was on a mix of chaff and high fibre cubes through winter. The yard we were at previously had very poor grass.

We recently moved to a new place around a month ago!

I will look into getting some Linseed, Thank you!

I would probably wait a few weeks until she has her summer coat through, unless you think she is uncomfortable. One of mine gets quite flakey skin when he is changing his coat, you may be noticing it because she was clipped.
Micronised linseed is good for coat and condition but go easy with it as it may put weight on.

Great - thank you! I will keep an eye on her for now as it doesn't seem to be bothering her hugely.

My now 25 yr old developed environmental allergies after we moved - flaky dandruff and itchy skin was becoming worse every spring - I could actually watch his skin crawl during the height of allergy season:(:(

What has helped him the most (about 90% improvement) is adding an additional 2,500 IU of pure human grade Vitamin E to his diet. That's in addition to whatever is in his vit/min supplement because my horses don't eat bagged feeds of any sort:)

I say "pure" Vitamin E because some Vit E equine products have selenium added. More selenium is not something my horses need:)

His mane has grown because he has stopped rubbing his neck on any post he can find:)

My draft gets linseed in his feed and still has a really scurfy coat right now (he also gets vitamin e). I think its just coat change season and it seems to have been going on forever this year.

Micronised linseed sorry! I have never found it puts weight on my 2 cobs, maybe its as they've been on it for 4 years now. They get a big handful twice a day. Surgeon at the hospital also mentioned its good for joints.
