I watched a video today of myself riding the horse that I bought for my OH but which turned out to be completely unsuitable. I hadn't seen the film before and I knew that the horse went behind the bit whenever I gave him a longer rein but when I saw him on the film he actually tucked his chin onto his chest and looked for all the world like I was using that horrible rollkur thing on him. The muscles in his neck were really standing out.

I don't suppose it really matters now as we no longer have the horse. We sold him after he threw me off on a hack and I nearly came off half a dozen more times . I sent him for re-schooling but no-one could do anything with him. I just wondered though what might have made him tuck his chin down so far? He had very well defined neck muscles and was lean and athletic looking. I think he may have been Welsh D x WB but I am not 100% certain. He was very nervous, headshy and humped his back up and threatened to buck when you got on. I had vet, dentist, saddler and physio but no-one could find a physical problem and said it was behavioural.

Draw reins and/or idiots with pessoa's and similar gadgets.

Edited to add...you can remove that apostrophe if you like, but somehow Pessoas didn't look right....

Yes, I thought that maybe his head had been strapped down. He never, ever put his head up when I rode him and, given half a chance, like I say, he put it straight onto his chest. Poor boy. I hope that he is ok with his new owner. I know that he had her off 3 times in the first week and I daren't ask how he is getting on now in case it's bad news.

Do you mean a bit like this????

Merlin has never had any of the above suggestions used on him, but this is his favorite method of evasion!!!!

He has had everything checked out for pain...... so it just seems that he likes it!!!

He obviously has a flexy neck

That said, he never tries to dump me either, just curls up and canters slower than a walk on sponsored rides, and can keep it up for hours
