So I was looking on horsequest and there is a horse that lost an eye in an accident.

The horse looks to be a nice horse, however I was wondering, does anyone ACTUALLY buy horses with one eye??

Obviously I have a horse with one eye.....but I only paid £1 for her ;)

Has anyone bought one?? Would you buy one?? What price would you pay for:

7 year old 17hh SF gelding. Good to hack. Has done low level dressage abroad, can jump but not competed.

Your thoughts?? :)

I haven't bought one, but if the right horse only had one eye then I certainly wouldn't discount it, though I would expect it to be priced lower than an equivalent horse with both eyes due to poss problems with adapting to the loss and cosmetic reasons. It would depend on how long the horse had been without the eye (ie if it had continued at the previous level and was used to it, or had only just lost it and was still adapting). I would also want to know why the horse had lost the eye - if it was just as a result of an accident then I wouldn't worry, but if it was a reult of a cancer then I would be more concerned incase of re-occurence or spread.
Goodness knows though as to the value of the chap you mention, I am awful at horse prices!

not had any involvement myself but i do remember readin a while back about a one eyed hores who competed in dressage.
would ask a vet (but thats just me lol)
good luck

If the horse was anything like Zoom I would buy all day long!!

I think intially it might put people off though unless they knew the horse as before I knew Zoom I would have said no I wouldnt look at a horse with one eye.. but after knowing Zoom and seeing what she can do and how she is even better than some of the two eyed horses we know ... Zooomy deffo changed my mind :)

A friend of mine had a mare on loan with view to buy - the horse had lost the sight completely in one eye - supposedly after some sort of accident. The horse was fantastic, would jump ANYTHING!! 5' was nothing to her. She wasn't the easiest of horses - a bit bolshy but had good irish breeding and was lovely to ride.

My friend was all set to buy her (not sure of price but around £1.5k I think) but the vet at her vetting thought the sight loss was due to an illness and not accident (possibly recurrent uveitis but I don't remember definitely) and there was suspicion over the other eye too so she didn't go ahead.

I'm not looking to buy.........to be honest it wouldn't bother me if the horse had one eye since Zoomy is a complete star and the missing eye just gives her character.

However, I thought that horses would go for peanuts.....whereas this horse is priced at £2.5k

I suppose that's not THAT much money but considering there are alot of horses out there for that money with similar CVs I was interested to see if anyone would pay that.

Yay Zoomy :D :D :D

I would definately buy a one-eyed horse.......not for £2.5k though.....unless it was AMAZING!

I think Zoom would sell for £2k easily If you were selling her I think shes priceless of course .. but for what she can do £2500 easily :) so if the other horse for sale is as good as Zoom then yes worth the money :)

Ok £2.7k including tack......I'll drop her off after work :D

If I wasn't going to uni I would SO get another one-eyed pony. I think it would be cool to have a whole load of one-eyed ponies :)

I bought a horse a few year ago who was advertised as having a blemish in one eye, when vetted it was discovered it was blind in that eye.
I bought him anyway at less than half the original asking price, he had a sucessful dressage career and was okish at SJ but awful to hack out.

I knew of a one eyed horse who very succesfully competed at BSJA even got to Blue Chip championships etc!

Better then most two eyes horses, I wouldn't dis count it as for price I would expect to get him £500 - £1000 cheaper.

Get a vets opinion aswell to see if this will affect in long term. Also re sale price will be reduced aswell.

I've known a couple,

One had an eye removed and friend bought it for 2.5K through a performance horse auction, horse was doing well at medium level. It turned out the horse jumped okay also.

The other went completely blind in one over a period of time. Since going blind this horse has a good BE Novice record and is looking to go IN/I soon.

Would I buy one? Probably not off the open market / advertised by someone I didn't know. However if I knew the horse well, then yes I would consider it.

I think it also makes a massive difference to the value if the horse is blind in one eye versus a horse with an empty socket...i used to school a horse with an eye missing due to accident and he was a lovely horse- like zoomy :)

didnt parkranger on here have trouble selling her one eyed horse?
