Hi just wondered if anybody has come across the following:

The horse has really bad dandruff on his neck and his neck becomes really damp and steams, yet he is not sweating or hot. He is fine within himself and has had a course of atarax for 5 days to see if would solve the problem. It is not itchy in anyway but along the line of his mane, his skin is literally peeling off continually.

The vet believes it to be an allergic reaction of some sort, but im not sure what to?

Any ideas

feedmark equidermis - brilliant stuff! my mare was really scurfy and her skin on her dock and under her mane was flaking away in big bits, i put her on this and within two weeks she was SO shiney, skin all cleared up and she looked really healthy. its expensive - around £50 for a months supply, but its definately worth it! Google 'feedmark' and it will bring up their website

i bought some stuff from chemist other week for a mare on our yard as she was the same. can't remember the name off hand but it was a scabies treatment for humans and it only cost £2.25 maybe worth a try as she looks great now. (its only in a little bottle but it goes a long way, will ask the mares owner tonight if i see her for the name).

How is scabies treated and what medicaton is used?

The treatment for scabies is simple and efficient. The medicines used are malathion liquid (eg Derbac-M, Prioderm or Quellada-M) or 5 per cent permethrin dermal cream (Lyclear dermal cream), all of which can be bought from pharmacies without a prescription.

Medical advice should be sought before using malathion on children under six months of age, and before using permethrin on children under two years.

Malathion is applied to the whole body and washed off after 24 hours. Permethrin is applied to the whole body and washed off after 8 to 12 hours. Make sure you carefully follow the directions for use supplied with the medicine.

Think you mean Benzyl Benzoate which is bought over the counter and used for Scabies in humans, we also use it on sweet-itch horses quite effectively. Remember to wash your hands after use !
