Hi everyone

I really need some advice. I am looking after my uncle's horse for the next week and went down for the first time today. There were a number of things that are cause for concern but the most worrying was his eyes. Parts of the whites of his eyes are red! It is not directly around the iris and they almost look bloodshot but very angrily so. There is no sign of swelling on his lids and no discharge coming from his eyes. Any ideas what it might be?

thanks in advance

Calling my uncle isn't really an option, this horse has been neglected by him already (as I mentioned this is not the only thing that's cause for concern). I have posted here in the hope that, as knowledge is power, I might have some idea of the possible diagnosis so then I can approach him with possibilities rather than just saying 'his eyes are red' which he can easily shrug off.

This may be a stupid question, but what colour is the horse?

I used to have an appaloosa who had red eyes, especially when irritated by wind/dust/flies. Bathing with cold tea used to do the trick.

It could also point to the horse being dehydrated.

As Izzie said, I'd be getting a vet to look at them, you really can't be too careful with eyes.

He's a piebald gypsy cob.

As I only started with him today, I'm not sure if he gets adequate water. He had been out in the paddock today for the first time in months (his yard has no winter t/o) so could be wind/dust/flies as you say. I just wanted to throw the question out there as I am in a difficult situation with this horse (and my uncle) which I won't go into.
