My new horse has a bad back which was discovered by the vet yesterday during his annual jab. She said he was showing a fair bit of sore muscles on his back, his saddle has recently been widened a little as it was a little narrow and the vet thinks this may be the cause? (the saddle being too narrow) I asked whether she thinks I should rest him and she said no, in fact gentle exercise will help, especially now the saddle fits better. I feel awful though if he is in pain??? Should I lunge instead? but he whizzes round like a deranged chicken because he is unfit and unbalanced!! This is why I have been riding in a large field so he has plenty of turning space until he becomes less stiff etc. He has pigeon toes which probably isnt helping the matter. He is 13 and otherwise sound/healthy. He hasnt been schooled much in the last year so is being brought back into work. I have the back lady booked in for next week to massage his back andnhave purchased a stephens gel-eeze pad with gel at the front and bck. Is there anything else I can do? supplentents or anything???

Have a look in the 'Learning' section of the Balance International website. They have a nice article on their remedial programme, which is designed for horses with particularly sore backs to do before going into a Balance saddle. Even if you don't look any further at the saddles themselves, this will probably be helpful to you.

will have a look thank you, sorry forgot to add, the back lady is registered!

fair enough, wasn't sure if she was just a massage therapist. I would think she will also give you some advice. It is normally lots of long and low, stretching and bending then proceed to pole work to encourage them to stretch and be more supple while building good muscle

as for supplements just give a good diet that includes enough protein to build new muscles

My mare is too recovering from a sore back due to an ill fitting saddle. She is undergoing physio treatment for this & I have been recommend to long rein her in a large area, avoiding circles, walking long & low ensuring that she is stretching through her back.

Would seek advice from a physio/chiro before commencing any treatment plan :)
