Thought I'd share this with you all as it amuses me somewhat where the owner is quoted to say she was born with a normal sized tail but it just kept growing.....................

strange that isn't it!!!!!!

Hmm, wonder what they'll say if the poor horse gets the tail caught round it's legs and injures itself?!

Surprised a tail would grow that long. I thought a tail would only grow a certain length to be honest as I would assume 'wild' horses don't have their tails trimmed do they?

I'd absolutely love to go up behind it with a pair of scissors!!

I don't know about it getting caught around it's legs, my first thought was oh my gosh what would happen it it got tangled in a fence or something similar!

It very probably just lives in a stable and never gets to do natural horse stuff in order for the tail to get trapped anywhere.

I haven't watched the video as at work, think I push my luck enough on here.....

Good point twinkling_kringle, poor thing, although it does state they put the tail up to go in the arena? I think I'll content myself in happily and naively thinking they only have it down for the photo's............

There are clips on You Tube. Search for Summer Breeze.

I guess they grew it that length just because they could. Apparently the horse broke a leg and whilst it was recuperating the kids thought it would be nice to see how long it would grow (tail, not leg!). Impractical is the word that comes to my mind, but as for cruel, hmm, inconvenient and inconsiderate perhaps, the horse looks well enough though.

Whatever flips your switch (and gets you in the GBR)

Far more cruel, imo, is the long tails dragging on the ground (natural and false) you can see on ridden horses in the ring. Totally pointless and how it enhances a horses performance or appearance is beyond me. Are Judges really so shallow as to take the length of tail into account? On the other hand, they can bear to see those ridiculous feet (not on the mare in the OP I might add) and think it good, so, yes, I guess they could well be.

in the wild horses tails stay no longer than floor length because nature (as ever) takes care of these thing by pulling bits out on bushes, mutual groomings and obviously, dragging on the gtriound when it gets that long.
as everyone has said tail hair will keep growing if left and i should think this silly womandoes keep the tail 'up' in some fashion most of the time or else the horse would trad on it gettting up and down, let alone any other time and if it was left au naturel then as i said at the beginning nature would take care of it.
unnessecary and for the owners personal vanity IMO.

.....if I had never trimmed my horses' tails they would be that long....

No they wouldn't. I don't trim my horses tails and they aren't that long. Many people, including me, keep long tails over here to deal with mosquitoes and flies - it isn't the same here as living in the UK, why can't people understand that?

Anyhow, I think the tail looks silly personally, but that's as far as it goes. It's not anyones place to say she shouldn't let the horse have a tail this length. She obviously looks after it and the tail will be plaited so that the horse is not tripping over it ... no different from the many many other people who plait their horses tails for the most part, over here.

The way something is done in the UK, does not mean it is right for others in different countries. I wish people on here would stop being so blinkered.

Someone commented on the article.
"I bet not many people in the UK know that in the US, show ponies have their tails injected to paralyze them so they don't swish them in the showring? Apparently this is classed as bad behaviour. Utter cruelty"

WTF?!

I love long tails but it is crazy long you surely would have to tie it up?

I mean its a genious way to make some money..... its not cruel for goodness sake the horse is in perfect condition!

No, not just you, I noticed it looked very unsound too

My boy's tail grows really fast too---had to chop 6 inches off the other day, as the other liveries stared in amazement, because it was dragging on the ground AGAIN! It gets in muddy dreadlocks and tangles around his legs when he walks if I don't keep it trimmed a bit.

I don't see the point myself of being in the Guiness Book for an extra-long tail: it's hardly a worthwile accomplishment, and far too much maintenance.

Now, the mane on that horse is gorgeous!

How on earth could a horse survive with a tail that long in the wild?

[/ QUOTE ]
The tail would not be that long in the wild - they aren't that long on my farm, Lol! and I don't cut any tails.

Naturally the horse wandering round etc would break the ends naturally with wear and tear. It must have been kept up and away to let it grow that long without damage. My native had propper native mane and tail for the 7 yrs i had him. I never trimmed his tail as it got to a certain length and broke away naturally.

As said before whatever floats your boat.
