Just had a phone call from my dad, he put Tully in Badgers stable earlier on, it's down a ramp thing and you have to turn into it and there's not that much room but Badger manages and he's loads bigger than Tul... Anyway, he banged his hip a bit on the way in, and now he is too scared to come out!!

They tried to pull him, encouragement from behind etc. but he just won't move! So now he is stood there with the door open looking at a feed on the wall that he daren't go and eat!

Do you think he will ever come out?? Any idea's??

Don't know if it would work in a stable but a friend had a horse who wouldn't come off the lorry. We backed him off quickly and he was off before he realised what had happened.

Hi, had exactly the same problem a few months ago. Sounds like you're/ your dad is on the right track. It took my V stubborn Welsh x a couple of days to come out with lots of encouragement and reassurance. We got him out with my OH holding onto his lead rope outside the stable coaxing him forward and me at his side to reassure him. The important thing I think is not to get stressed by it or make it a big issue as he'll pick up on that. We kept going back and asking him out and he would get as far as getting his front feet to the door then stop. After a few minutes of coaxing, if he hadn't moved, we'd let it go and try again later. Min is still distrusting of doorways since then and does try and rush through so you may need to work on that for a while.
I posted on here about it at the time and some of the suggestions were to try and back him out, if the yard was secure, to leave his food and water outside the stable for him to come out in his own time. http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1884099/an/0/page/28#1884099

Can you safely leave food and water at a distance and leave him to get hungry/thirsty enough to be brave and come out - might take a day but he will.

Better than taking on a big horse in a small area if you don't have to.

Will he come out for you - Chancer does more things for me than anyone else as I do most of his handling and have a good relationship with him.

Is he too scared to come out or could it be medical?? I've heard of horse fracturing their stifles from banging them on door frames, gate post etc.

If he's too scared, I like the idea above about backing him out

you could go for the old fasioned method of blindfolding him..... (horse, not dad). i know of someone who still does it to load her horse. Only way he'll load.
