Horse won't eat

Hi all,

So I have a new horse which I would say is in moderate condition(you can see his ribs but nothing horrendous) he is 4yrs old and just about to be sent away to be broken.

I would like to start feeding him to build him up but he wont eat , I ve tried simple systems lucie nuts, pura beet, healthy tummies and a&p high fiber . he has about 2 mouth full's and that's it I've tried to give him small amount with carrots in and a bit of molasses he just doesn't get it!

I dont want to feed him high energy feed as i want to keep him sain.

His last owners said he didn't get any feed just hay which he eats fine.

I'm having his teeth done on monday.

Any advice appreciated
 
I think you'll probably find A&P Fast fibre to be an acquired taste, I'd suggest you try Spillers High Fibre Cubes, they usually like this, and maybe some readigrass or alfa oil with this.
 
Yep, mint or celery seeds make great appetisers... Also, ring the feed companies explain your dilemma and his nutritional requirements and they will send you a selection of samples out to try with him to save you buying and wasting a bag. Perhaps something like readi grass, which is basically dried grass, would be tempting to start him off.

Feed wise, once he is eating hard feed I'd go for something fibre based like dengie Alfa oil as opposed to build up... But that's my personal preference.

I have a fussy eater and he would not touch the feed that has spearmint in!

I used pure condition pellets successfully for 18 months on my very fussy gelding.

But now im looking at changing to something else and he now wont eat this!
 
i tried feeding my lads simple systems and they just wouldn't eat it, and they aren;t usually fussy. No matter how slowly i introduced it, and added apple juice, mints etc, they just left it.

I now feed baileys outshine and beet pulp, barley and a scoop of copra coolstance, and they wolf it down and have put on great condition.
 
Fennell seeds, horses love it, smells of aniseed and is an appetite stimulant, just one scoop, makes the medicine go down, medicine go down, its really good stuff.
 
Thank you just an update he will now eat dengi hi fi , mixes, nuts . He doesn't like any soaked feed linseed or alalfa but at least he is eating !!:)
