1. Try with a lead.

2. Make no big deal out of it

3. Persevere....I would have stayed until he went in if it was me, but then I'm stubborn!

4. Will he go through puddles out on a hack?? If you can get him into a puddle stand in it for as long as possible.

5. Is he naughty or scared?

My horse didn't like water.
We cured him of his dislike by leading him off another horse, with me off him. He went in 1st time he was asked! Did it a few more times then I got back on him and again, he was lead by my instructor off her horse and put up no resistance. Then I rode him on my own and he just trundled through like he'd been doing it all his life..
Sorted!

We have tried a lead, we have tried a lunge line behind him, and infront of him. He will go in puddles on hacks and I have been paddling in the flooded corner of our field this week, but take him to cross country and he says NO! Which results in bucking and rearing unhappy horsey and unhappy me!

hi
had a horse at our yard couple weeks ago that refused to go in to water, although absolutly fine with puddles. It was as if we were asking him to walk in to a brickwall. In the end we got a horse to give him a lead and then some one on the ground leading him in (with wellies on!) Got him to walk up and down the edge and then finally in. Been fine ever since.

I would deal with this by ;-

Take your horse to the water " on line" ( lunge line, long rope - whatever)
Stand horsy in front of water and wait - no pressure. If horsy wants to move away fine - put horsy to work - lunge, circle - whatever but keep working. After a while take back to the water -no pressure. Repeat as often as needed until horsy decides best to look at water and maybe sniff it or put foot in. Then take horsy away walk around a bit and then represent. Repeat above unil horsy desides to go into water.
Never failed yet. Just be patient and allow lots of time
Then after this do the same ridden if needed.
