My gelding appears to have trouble weeing. In the school and on the road, he will refuse to go although he stands in position. If I try to make him move on, he will root himself and put his head up, which can be very frustrating. As soon as we are back in the stable he will go immediately, and i assume that he goes in the field too.

He has been checked by our vet and recently the physio gave him a quick looking at, but both said that he was happy and healthy. My only guess is that he dislikes the surface of the sand school and the road, as he is better out on hacks in the woods or open land.

How can I make him wee? I have tried whistling but it seems to have no affect on him, and i have tried to teach him to wee on command but he isnt picking it up, probably because most times, he wees in the field when i cant see him. Any ideas?

If he has been checked out by your vet and physio and is fine, then it sounds like he may be taking the pee a bit - pretending to wee means he gets to stand and do nothing! Horses are clever enough to do that sort of thing! Next time, give him a kick and get him moving - if he wants to go he will soon go!

I wonder if it's geldings in general, mine doesn't wee much in his stable, but is guaranteed to wee as soon as you lead him out in a morning before he reaches his field!!! I think sometimes, despite how 'desperate' they feel the need they hang on until they are happy with the surface or environment or time!! lol!, mine also hasn't yet done one when ridden, but has as soon as i'm off there he goes! but then he is still very young!

Few horses will wee on concrete, unless they are desperate, so he's not unusual in not wanting to wee on the road. Just stick him on the grass verge or something if you're on the road & he needs a wee.
As for the not weeing in the school, is that lots of different schools or just the one? If its just the one I'd guess he finds that particular surface too hard, or just unpleasant to wee on.

when my horse was a youngster he wouldn't pee under saddle. he really prefers to do it on a bed, rather than in the field. so I would bring him in, put him in his box for 10mins-he would pee and then we'd ride. eventually on a really long hack, he had to pee-he seemed quite surprised he could do it with me on him :D
not been a problem since but he always pees in his stable as soon as he comes in. I wouldn't make it an issue unless it seems he is doing it to evade work (and I've seen riding school ponies do this).

My cob pretends he needs a wee as soon as we get into the yard to tie up for work, or in the field just after I've caught him for work, just spreads out and stands there waiting.....till he gets told off, he'll pee for England in his box.

My old pony used to pretend he wanted wee everytime there was something he didn't want to do. I think his was a form on nappyness. He regularly did it on a particular ride and nearly always as soon as you entered the ring at a show.

I've only ever known my current gelding to wee once on a ride in the 7.5 years I've owned him and I regularly do 2hr plus hacks. He has come in yard beggining to drip as he doesn't tell me he needs a wee. He always saves a wee and a poo for his stable as soon as he comes in from the field and he really tries to hold onto that first poo until he is in the stable even to the point of getting cramps. I always put him in the stable for 10 minutes when I bring him in if I am going to ride and want him comfortable.
