Any ideas would be hugely appreciated as my O/H is either going to leave me or abandon my horse in a far away place! ;-)

We have electric tape with wooden posts about 3 foot from the hedge boundry of my field. My o/h did all this for me- it took him a long time and cost a lot of money (he's NOT a horsey person so this is doubly kind of him)
Anyway big horse has always been a windsucker/cribber but wont bother in the field unless he bites the gate sometimes which i never try and stop as its metal so no damage.
Until the grass became scarce now every day he's just pulling the posts up with his teeth- enabling him to get through into the narrow gap where he's fine until i get there then he puts his head down and charges straight through the fence and across the field.
EVERY day we are fixing bits/replacing bits and patching up. Its costing money and time and tbh tempers are fraying!
I'm considering keeping him stabled as according to o/h the alternative is get rid (he's not actually serious we both love this stooopid old thing!)
I *think* its due to his rug he isnt scared of the fence anymore but its -4 today and set to get colder and he's clipped so leaving it off is not an option.

Please save us!!!

Run a really low level tape a few inches of the ground and if it's electric he will get a shock as he tries to pull them up? Worked with my mare who use to pull the plastic posts out of the ground. Also stopped her ducking underneath with rugs on cuz her nose got a shock.

Try a stronger current & more strands of tape. Also have the top tape & the clips on TOP of the posts so he can't get a grip on the actual post. Hope this makes some sort of sense.

Are you running the fence off batteries?? If so double them up so he gets 24v just connect the two batts positive to positive using wire and hook up as normal making sure you have another piece of tape an nose height, he will only do this once!!!!:D:D:D:D

We had a similar problem. Our mare used to charge the electric fence and rip through it.We tried lots of different things , but to be honest she was dangerous with it and we were worried about the tape tangling up in her legs etc.She used to snap the plastic poles too:mad:...anyhow the only way to cure the ratbag was to put up post and rail fencing...which although costing £600 ..has worked a treat and no more problems:D.....

Hi haha, ALL the above done!

We have a shetland who does the limbo very well so we already have a low level

We have put tape on the top of the posts (worked at first be he's hard/brave) and he can still somehow pull them out, Ive never actually seen him pull them but every time i visit more are out and i'm assuming he's pulling as this is what he did before we taped the top.

He has clean hay out there all the time and comes in during the day with ad lib hay also he's fed twice a day. I always put enough at night out so there is come left over come morning.

I'm going to borrow a new energiser just incase mine's not producing muck kick

I'm at my wits end- but he does always look sorry about it! ;-)

Double batteries? not one i've tried, Would i need 2 energisers for that? Might be a plan

I cant really do post and rail as he will destroy it completely in fact thats one of the main reasons i was given him, He lived at a very swanky yard but they had almost got their own full time fencer picking up after him!

Take his rug off and make sure batteries are always fully charged. With hay in the field to eat, he wont get cold.

He sounds bored...Is he out on his own? life isn't just about eating, contrary to popular belief... Mine, although outwardly 'happy' would get up to all sorts of mischief on his own...

I agree with the bored bit, does he have a friend out to play with him? Could you do less turnout maybe? A friend had a horse who would go through electric fencing, but only when rugged, so although you might stop him for as long as you can bear to leave him naked if he's as clever as he sounds as soon as you replace the rug he'll be back through the fence again.

I take it there's no way you can do mains powered electric wire from proper fence posts is there? We have this and it provides such a huge jolt that nobody ever goes anywhere they aren't supposed to be on our yard, even with the taped off sections because the power is that tough (gives me nasty red burns when I touch it though - shoot me now for cruelty!!) something to consider maybe? Although I appreciate that it's expensive.

No just the one energiser. 2 car batteries 2 piece of cable about a foot long, attach cable positive to positive and neg to neg then connect up and watch him jump!!! he will only do it once:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Are you feeding hay in the field? Sounds like he's hungry :)
This! My monster TB mare went through an electric fence with wooden posts which is wired into the mains 3 times in a week  put a bale of hay in the field and no problems since. Also I have tied a loop of electric fence tape through the front of her rug so its against her skin, the outside of the loop will connect with the fence if she tries so she can feel it despite her rug.

Wind a bit of electric tape around front of rug so it goes down into the neck hole and out the bottom before being tied up to itself. When he leans the current will run round the tape and by pass his rug. No crueler than unrugged horse in summer with electric fence.
