Hi All,

I am looking to buy a 3.5 tonne horsebox to transport my 16.2 TB to local and regional events. I have a budget of £3K and ideally want something that is just reliable and safe. It doesn't have to look very pretty but has to be a solid box.

I have been looking around and seen a lot of the Ford transit with Ifor Williams back .. does anyone have any experience of them and if so good or bad?

Would like some honest feedback if possible.

Or any feedback on reliable lorries etc, what to avoid and what has a good reputation.

for example, I have been told that the Renaults are not very reliable?

I have just sold my 3.5t renault after four years and she never let me down, but she was a newer one.
I personally dont like the ifor 3.5t, they arent stable enough for me but i know people that have them and like them.

Ok thanks.

The newer ones are really nice but I only have budget of £3K so the likelyhood of finding something that is a 3.5 and is relible and safe is actually quite low!

I'll keep looking though!

I agree with the above comments and also a 16.2 would be a bit of a squash headroom wise.

If you could add 1k ish you could look at ones like a VW LT35 which are more stable and roomier, we have one of those. Still a steepish ramp and for that money it will be oldish so may need some work but would def be more suitable.

Yes thinking about this and doing some research I might have to increase the budget to about £5K.

The VW - I have also heard that these are poorly built and are unreliable. Have you had any problems with your at all?

I have been told that Mercedes and Ford are the best of the bunch but like anything, they all have their problems sometimes.

The Ifor Williams on a Transit has a very high centre of gravity. They were designed for taking Sheep, Shetland Ponies and Section A B and C's to the mart (market/auctions). (Maybe an under-weight Section D). They are unstable and rock from side to side.
Unless you are very lucky indeed buying a low budget 3.5 ton will result in you spending out a lot in repairs and maintenance I am afraid.

The Renault, Vauxhall and Citreon (This has a larger engine) are the best but make sure it was a chassis pan cab i.e just a chassis and cab and not a cut down van as these are not strong enough.
