Horsebox breakdown cover

If you do a joint policy with your insurance you might be able to get monthly payments but the APR will be high. Try Antony Evans they are great to deal with and use Equine Rescue. My rescue for a 7.5 was £125 at this renewal but it is attached to my insurance policy.

Don't use whoever it is that is linked to NFU horsebox insurance. That company has twice completely let down my YO. Think it's PRP or something like that. For both the following I was being 'groom' and so know what happened first hand.

The first time was about 3 years ago when the brakes stopped working properly on an A road. They sent out a car style mechanic to repair at first - for a 7.5 ton box.. They 'couldn't find' anyone to come out - mid afternoon in daylight - and transport the horse - a friend had to turn out. The box had to be left where it was until it was finally towed to repair the following day.

The latest one was a couple of months ago - same firm. Rush hour, dark and again on a main A road blocking busy traffic. The horse on board was 17.2 - no way it would fit in the 3.5 ton box that they offered. Apart from being overweight it would be dangerous with insufficient headroom. They offered a 7.5 ton lorry and then after waiting over an hour phoned to say that 'they couldn't find anyone to come out' and said that we'd have to 'self recover' the horse.

The Police were needed to close the road so that the horse could be swapped in the end onto a friend's lorry. The company is supposed to organise this but failed to do so. In the end my YO had to contact the Police herself and try to get thru to them what was needed. In the end the Police were great and very nice and helpful. The tow truck turned up about 5 hours after we'd broken down (clutch had gone).

Box is used a lot and is generally reliable and well maintained. Just bad luck that it broke down twice but the lack of support/solution from this company is disgraceful. Don't use them unless you have a 3.5 ton and/or a horse small enough to fit in one.

Looking to renew my Horsebox breakdown cover, does anyone know a reputable firm who do pay monthly rather than a lump sum?

Always found NFU excellent and you pay monthly without extra cost. Last time 7.5 ton lorry broke down as we were bringing new pony home. Company liaised with police about shutting the road. However, mechanic who came out managed to create a part at the roadside which allowed us to limp home. Couldn't fault the guy!

On previous occasion, NFU also organised a taxi to get OH home from back of beyond.

We have horse rescue on the policy and the transport provided has always been more than adequate for horse or pony.

I wouldn’t insure anything with NFU ever again, I had a total non fault accident & they were terrible. They offered me an estate car as alternative transport 🙄 then called me to say that I wasn’t actually insured, which I was. AVOID. Lorry now insured with Adrian Flux who use Equine Rescue.

Equine Rescue has helped me out several times and I would recommend them. However, the last time I was in a pickle I did have a frustrating time with them with the fault sitting with the call handler despite them asking the right questions.

The 7.5 ground to a halt on an island where 3 A roads merge, with the prop shaft sheared. It was a 999 situation and the police were with me in minutes and closed 2 roads off, diverting the 3rd. I had 2 big horses on board. Call went into Anthony Evans and a recovery truck was with me very quickly, they listened to me tell them it was tow not repair job. Equine Rescue contacted me and the call handler asked me the weight of my horses which was 1450kg combined and the type of lorry they were stood on. I was told a lorry was on its way.

The police wanted to open the road asap, but I was not prepared to off load onto the road before the recovery lorry arrived. The driver of the recovery lorry called me to give an ETA and was 20 minutes away, I said 'you are in a 7.5 or more aren't you ?' the answer was no, 3.5t with 1000kg payload.

Definitely recommend equine rescue services. They were great when I had a blowout on the m5 last year with horse on board. I was by myself and really scared, but felt really reassured by them, and they managed to get someone out to change the tyre within 30mins

You can go direct to Equine Rescue and don't have to bundle insurance in with Anthony Evans if you don't need to.

I think it's about £125 for the year and well worth it.

I had similar where I asked very specifically to not have a 3.5t with a half wall, the driver rang me to confirm location and yup... they were driving a 3.5t with a half wall. To be fair to ERS they did then sort another horsebox and apart from that I couldn't fault them and I will continue to use them but will always check what and who is coming to recover the horse.

I’ve just been quoted £143 by Anthony Evans for Horsebox rescue as an add on to my policy - (£125 for boxes less than 15 years old). To get the same cover direct from ERS would start at £228 for anything older than 12 months ..
