I'm thinking of taking the plunge and ditching the trailer for a wagon. I've been to see one today and wondered if anyone could tell me if this is a good deal or not.
Its a 1999 Ford Iveco 7.5tonnes. It is partitioned for 3 horses but realistically will probably only take 2. Rubber matting in horse area. Easy ramp. It has an external tack locker and a big external cupboard for water, haynets etc. It has day living - seating and cupboards, a fold down table and a sink but its quite spacious and has only recently been refurb'ed. The outside of the vehicle has just been resprayed too. I had a drive in it and bearing in mind I've never driven anything this big before I thought it wasn't too bad to drive (although I def need some practice/lessons before putting Jenny in it LOL).
The owner is asking £18k ono for it - does this sound reasonable. He also said he would take my trailer off my hands too - its an Ifor Williams double box - about 7 years old - any ideas how much the Ifor would be worth as well?
Thanks for anyone who knows about these things - I'd also be grateful for any advice for a first time wagon owner.

OK thank you.

Do you think I should just accept the asking price minus the value of the trailer then or try offering a bit lower and if so how much?
PS can't risk offending vendor as he's also my farrier!

Yes sounds reasonable

Although what type of living does it have?

I increased my budget to 20k and I am still having huge problems finding something half decent

depends if hes open to offers - and yes the price of the trailer is taken off the sale value- you need to see how much he will offer for your trailer - TBH I would sell your trailer privately - you will realise more for it , but I would also see ( via horsemart etc) how much your trailer is actually worth and not take a silly Part Ex offer on it.

Yes he did say he was open to any sensible offer. However I'm not sure what a sensible offer would be! I don't want to offer too much but on the other hand I wouldn't want to miss out by offering too little! I thought poss offering £15k and the trailer but a friend thinks I should offer even less than this. I am completely clueless as I've never been in this situation before. Any ideas???

Your trailer is worth £2k i would think, so offering £15k plus the trailer means you're actually offering about £17k. That's about 5% short of his asking price which i would say is at the top end of the spectrum anyway. Offer him £15k cash and see what he says

Hi Peter - I'm going to try to arrange for a mechanic to look at it as soon as I can. Rambo - sorry to sound thick but do you think its reasonable to offer £15k with or without the trailer? As I say I'm a bit clueless about these things and I don't want to be ripped off but I don't want to offer him something insultingly low either.
