Seen a lorry I like the look of, but just 2 problems

1) its in somerset, im in yorkshire
2) I dont know the first thing about the mechanical side of them.

The lady has sent me plenty of pictures, and the living / horse area looks to be just what im looking for

So I was thinking of having it inspected/ floor checked, and all the mechanical bits looked at, for piece of mind, so that if its all ok I can drive down and buy it, rather than having a wasted 400 mile round trip should I go view myself and something not be right.

I think im rambling, so ill get to the point(s)

has anyone ever had a horsebox vetting/ inspection - how much did it cost
and also, can anyone reccomend someone either nationwide or in the somerset area

thanks :) xx

I'm selling my horsebox and had somebody look at it yesterday, it turns out it won't suit her as she wants to fit ponies and a cart in. She's looked at loads and had another inspected on Friday it cost her £275, it failed massively.

I think you are thinking about it the right way however what happens if you get there and it isn't right? To me it would depend on the price of the lorry much like a horse. I bought my lorry 4 years ago and from a dealer, when I found the brakes weren't ok it cost me £2k so an inspection is good but if I hadn't seen the lorry I wouldn't have bought it. I asked loads of questions and if that wasn't enough a few more!!!

Personally I'd go look first, then arrange to have it inspected and then arrange for them to deliver or collect it, might waste more money by doing the inspection first??

Where are you in Yorkshire?
My mum is meant to be selling her lorry, however she's changing her mind at the mo.... So not sure what she's doing at the mo.
Can't recommend anyone in Somerset, but if you do buy a lorry and need a great mechanic I can recommend one near Ilkley (world champion stock car racer) great family, and have serviced my mums lorries for years. Does the neighbours too.
PS if your after a Coachbuilt 2 horse for not silly money on a V reg Daf 45/130 PM me and I'll ask mum what she's going to do .... It's on Horsequest and is silver

iconique- Im happy to buy it from the pictures, as long as I have someone look and tell me that everything is solid/ in working order and most importantly that it is mechanically sound. The lady was good enough to send me a good 20-odd pictures, and all dimensions, so I have a good idea what the lorry is. If I got there and something was drastically wrong I obviously wouldnt take it home, but even if I went to view, I dont know a thing about the mechanical side

milli-moo, thanks but I allready have a 7.5 tonne lorry (i assume thats what yours is) , im downsizing xx

Ah..... Yes ours is a 7.5t, my mums looked at 3.5t but was worried about not having enough payload - she
then got all serious about going back to a trailer as she's not using the lorry enough these days. However she wants a Bockmann Top Master, and you can't get them 2nd hand, and will be the thick end of £12-13k for a new one (hence why they're so rare, cos you can buy a lorry for that, plus they're 2.4t empty)
Good luck in your quest.
Try and find out what is reinforcing the cab from the horse area - it needs beefing up, and Make sure, if the breast bar is not collapsable, that you can fit a horse through the back door.
If your near the A1, go visit the horsebox man. His Lorries look ok.
Finally, speak to the AA. I think they do inspections on cars, so may be able to to vans too

I can thoroughly recommend this chap
http://www.essexvehicleinspections.co.uk/ who inspected ours, he was reliable, rang as soon as he had finished and put comprehensive report in the post also.

I liked the fact that he was experienced with the horsebox side of things, we had one inspected at a VOSA approved station once and they gave it a clean bill of health but when we went to collect and pay for it the ramp was dropped and it collapsed, we rang them and they said they did not inspect any of the horse side of things just the MOT type things (sure they used better terminology but you get what I mean!)

Essex horsebox inspections was about £275 if I remember but well worth the piece of mind, not sure how far he travels though.
