Horsebox lockers?

We're still on our lorry hunt! Looking for a compact 7.5t, but there aren't too many about.. however I have noticed that a lot of these have lockers which intrude into the horse area, rather than the living or the skirts of the lorry - probably to make the most of the space.

While these may be handy for sensible horses, we don't want these in our next lorry as my horse is "one of those" who likes to leap around and stand on two legs before we set off, and I know she'd try (and probably succeed) to get her feet up on the lockers.

Is it possible to have these lockers removed and the sides re-inforced? Or is this quite a tricky/costly thing to do? It seems such a shame to discount all these otherwise seemingly lovely lorries purely because of the lockers! x

It is possible to remove lockers & seal up where they were, most things are possible but why? You would be incurring quite a bit of extra expense by having lockers removed & sealing up where they were. There are plenty of horseboxes out there that haven't got lockers that invade the horse area so looking at those would be a better & certainly cheaper option.

I've got a Tristar with no tack lockers as such, it has a locker each side behind the rear wheels in the skirt. I haven't had to pay out for any unnecessary customisation.

Yes easy to do but will need the lorry painting outside and some work and new mats inside which will cost, personaly I dont think they are a problem if they are tall enough and the top is strong and curved so if the horse rears they hit the roof long before they can get on the locker....

We have a piece of thick marine ply fitted at 45 degrees from just under the windows to the front of the tack locker. Works a treat. And cheap!

We bought ours without any tack lockers and then put in a small locker (2 saddles only) that goes under the living. It only costs a few hundred pounds to do :)

These are the internal/external pics of mine, it was removed by the previous owner and suited me for the same reasons as I am not a fan, although they are obviously extremely useful, thats just my own opinion. This one was came up from the floor height, and the door was sealed and covered on the inside with metal boarding stuff with non-sharp edges, so if in future I want it back, it can be easily reinstated. Probably the cheapest way to do it with it still being safe to use. If they were floor height lockers you could do it very easily, if go below the floor (thru the floor) it will mean replacing the floor back to the cross beams to make it safe...at the least, so that would prob. be a professional job I reckon?

Inside (during renovation), you can see the metal boarded bit that covers the edges of the locker, with a hole for the handle:

Outside (some people have attempted to put saddles in here ):

Hope it helps a bit ;)

Thanks for the replies everyone, and thank you for the piccies coop! Obviously ideally we'd just go for one without the lockers but we've only seen a couple that suit (and aren't the other end of the country) and they've been snapped up. We're looking to get one sooner rather than later, so it was just something I was pondering really but will probably just keep fingers crossed that the perfect lorry will appear soon. I'll go and check out central england, thanks smudge :) x
