I was just wondering roughly how much it is to get a horsebox plated (have never owned a box before so haven't got the foggiest idea )

Also how much would you expect to pay for a 2 horse D plate ford cargo in good condition for its age?

I take it you mean through its test? If we get away less than £1000 we think it is OK. The last time it was about £600 but then the alternator went within a fortnight!! That includes a full service as it makes sense to do it all together. Ours is a 7.5 X reg Iveco. Sorry can't help you with price of 2 horse.

We use ours an awful lot by the way, dont know if there is more to do because of that, but equally I know that diesel engines dont benefit from hardly ever being used!!!

If its not been used for a while the tyres tend to get flat spotted and need replacing...

It usually costs a £1000 to go through plating - though last time ours went straight through so it was only the test costs (but that is a first!)

thank you , yes I did mean put it through the test (as I said I havent owned one before so have no clue what I'm on about).
I was just looking for a rough price as I have been offered a box but it hasn't been of the yard in a while.

Depending on what "a while" is I'd be very very cautious. If it has just sat in one place there could be a whole host of things wrong with it. I'd make sure you got it thoroughly checked out before parting with any cash.

its been taken out to be given a run every few weeks and started every week as far as I am aware. One of my relatives knows a mechanic so we will be getting him to check it over for us.

I have said to the owner would they be pepared to get it plated/ tested and we will pay them the money IF it passes and they have agreed.

thanks again for the replies

Get them to put a Plate on for you.

The actual cost of plating is $54. I normally take it myself, get it tested then fix anything that is broke. I owned my box for over 10 years and in the whole of that time I think it only failed on one serious thing that cost me $600 to fix. The rest were silly little things that were less than $20 to sort out. Or they let me fix it there and then, all it needed was a bolt being tightened. For 10 years it was very good, this year it failed dramatically and I've scrapped it.

So depends on the lorry - in 10 years I haven't spent more than $1,500 on my lorry including new tryes and exhausts. Other lorries will cost you that every year.

Do not buy it unless it has a plate. My lorry only died this year as it has been sat on the farm, not driven for 2 years while my horse was lame and it rusted away.

Only ever paid test fee on our old Bedford in 14 years of ownership apart from 2 years - once a leaking brake hose £45 for replacement part and 1 hrs labour so about £65 and a tail pipe on exhaust blowing £60 odd for part fitted

I do as DieselDog does - take box and reapir any failures afterwards, be aware though that you will have to drive it through the test centre and do everything they ask - not like a car MOT.

Only hoping now our new (to us!) MAN chassis is as reliable as old Betty Bedford was

Like Miller I have an old Bedford (ours is called Bluebell though!). And we have never spent even close to £1000 for plating - I think OH would faint if I presented him with that kind of bill!
Last yeat was £310, year before was £500 but that included two tyres, ours had been very lightly used for a couple of years before we had it and as mentionned above the tyres had perished so we have now over the last 3 years replaced all but one, which was about £120 a time but necessary, and touch wood has been out biggest expense so far!!

I would think at the moment for a D-reg cargo you wouldn't want to be paying more than an absolute top limit of £4k. When we were shopping 3 years ago we nearly bought a D reg Leyland and they wanted £5k for that and I felt that was a little overpriced, paid less than that for Bluebell after the leyland spectacularly failed mechanics checks! And market has dropped so I would think between £2k and £4k depending how good condition it is in.
