Could any of you with horseboxes tell me what sort of ventilation you have in the horse area please?
My horsebox has 3 windows at the horses head side and 2 vent windows on the other but if it is warm they come out sweating on the very shortest of journeys so I'm worried about the longer journeys and warmer days.
Does a roof vent make alot of difference? Is a rotary one best? or extractor fan etc etc?????

Any advice would be much apprieciated

I have the use of 2 7.5 ton lorries, one has windows at the horses head only but is extra high so plenty of room, the other has the same as yours, neither have any roof vents, I have travelled in very hot weather, sometimes with 3 in lorry one and had no problems with horses getting too hot.

If they sweat excessively extra ventilation may help, the odd horse does get warmer and it may be that changing the travelling order or moving partitions is required until you find what suits each horse best.

I had an issue with the horses getting warm with just windows (4) for ventilation in my previous equi-trek trailer until put in two rotating roof air vents. They work a treat

Ventilation is terrible in some horselorries and worse in trailers!

Ideally you need a roof vent the bigger the better! The large horse transporters you see have huge 2ft sq ones as the air is sucked in here and exchanged with the air flowing over the horses backs and then out the side windows

speed is also vital for this to work!

50mph is the ideal speed for the above air exchange to take place no faster no slower!

Having a fan also helps! You can get one fitted at Gazeley horsebox repairs in newmarket! You can have a fan that can suck in more air or expel it so you can choose!

Look here for the guide on ventilation that was done for defra

Don't know how to paste the direct link here!

Thanks for the replies. With regards to the roof vents is one enough? Is there an optimum position it increase air flow?? Is a rotary vent better or worse than the pop up type??

Thanks again!:)

I've got a little 3.5tonne converted van and my horse always sweats up travelling, even on short journeys -- can these sorts of things be fitted to stuff like my van?x
