Hi

I'm mooching around looking at boxes and also enquire about the payload. I had a reply today saying that the info on the boxes plate reads:

3500kg
5500kg
1600kg
2600kg

Can anyone explain to me what this means? In simple terms :)

From the top;

3500kg is the Gross weight of the vehicle, the maximum that the vehicle + fuel + you + horse and anything else carried on the vehicle may be.

5500kg is the Gross Train Weight - often called just Train weight. All the stuff said above about vehicle + load + trailer drawn by vehicle + load carried on the trailer.

1600kg Front axle weight - the maximum weight that the front axle may weigh when the vehicle is used on a road.

2600kg Rear axle weight - the maximum weight that the rear axle may weigh when the vehicle is used on the road.

Exceeding any of the weights given is an absolute offence - effectively you cannot plead 'not guilty,' There are two defences you were proceeding to the nearest available weighbridge to check weigh the vehicle and load. Or, you were returning from the nearest available weighbridge having found vehicle + load too heavy to remove some of the excess load. Fines may be high especially if you exceed the stated weights by 40% or more, in which case the charge will probably be 'use vehicle in dangerous condition, the Court must give ponts and may consider disqualification.

To find the 'payload' or what you can carry, take empty vehicle with full tank of fuel to a weighbridge. With you sitting in the vehicle take the weight displayed on the readout from 3500kg and the result is your 'payload.'
